I went to get a oil filter from the dealership, (I've always used factory oil filters) and the parts man asked me if I wanted the older & larger one instead of the newer smaller one. He said the mechanics prefer them, I had no idea they would fit so I said yes.

IMO the larger one should flow better and not restrict the flow as much. Also I'm hoping not to have the leaking oil filter issues any more. Anyone else doing this?

I use a larger filter. Never had any issues at all. Looks like it would be too big but it isnt and fits fine. I dont use MOPAR filters but the large ones are all essentially the same size.

I couldnt believe the puny filter on the HEMI from the factory. I mean who are they kidding here? - My little 1.1L toyota has a larger filter!

I use the large and small. I don't see a difference.

I use the large one because it is readily available around me. It is the same filter used on the 2009-2012 Hemi's, and nothing has changed on the engines themselves so you are good. On my second large filter and have had zero issues...

Does anybody know why exactly they changed to the smaller filter? I mean there has to be some sort of reason why. I just ordered a set of Royal Purple filter for $23 shipped. I hope I got the right size!

Royal Purple 10 48 Extended Life Oil Filter Cross Reference | eBay

Only theory I have heard was because the 2013+ trucks have electric power steering instead of hydraulic. I can't see why this would affect the oil in anyway but it is the only thing that has changed on this engine. On another note, the engine gained a 5 hp increase with the removal of the power steering pump...

There is no real difference between the two in oil flow or flow restriction as stated in the op. The only difference is capacity, able to put more oil in. The other is filter media surface area. While the difference is minimal there is still more media in the big one. But dont mistake this for extended life. When using mopar filters the dodge reccomended change interval should be respected as these cardbord filters get pretty stiff and tend to spread the pleats after a few months.
The other thing to think about is when you go above a certain rpm the filters go into bypass mode in order to provide the needed oil flow.
So theoretically a filter that filters better and has a higher flow rate when not in bypass will spend more time filtering and capture more debris. And synthetic media filters dont get all stiff after a few months. A win win situation no?

Certain OEMs already use syn media filters in order to have the extended drain intervals they offer ( mercedes, land rover, some bmw are some ive done personally, all cartridge style filters) someone here also mention the TRD filters are syn while regular toyota are not.
As extended drain gets more and more popular we will see more OE with syn filters.
The industry is also trending towards syn oil fill. Gm already has dexos and GF-6 is coming soon so im excited to see where we will be in a few years in regards to oil change intervals.

Smaller filter means less oil and less material to spend money on. It is literally so manufacturer can save a few pennies a truck.
