So after the dealer did an oil change, got that thrown in when I purchased the truck, I noticed oil on the front cross member. I haven't looked under the hod yet but what could this oil be from that far forward? Was the mechanic that messy when putting oil back in the motor?

Oil filter ,if you SPILL any taking the filter off, it will drip for days. Depending on the incline it's parked.

That's seriously the worst location for the filter. I really want to get a relocation kit...

Thanks for the info. Guess the first oil change they did a better job of keeping that area clean.

Yup as others said the oil filter. I use a large zip lock bag over the filter when removing. It helps keep the mess to a minimal.

A engineer decided to put that filter there. Because they have all this book smarts in there head, they had no room left for common sense. And what's wrong with king and queens.

Hey now, I'm an engineer and I can tell you that's a bad location for that filter lol.

What probably happened is this:

The engine design is probably controlled by one group that has certain design requirements given to them by another group. These design requirements are based on the line of vehicles that the manufacturer is offering. They're given information like how large the external dimensions can be and things like that. They likely use the same design year after year and make small changes only.

The chassis design is controlled by another group that also has certain design requirements. They also have certain requirements they are given by another group. They take the engine designs and make them fit in the vehicle. Usually this means designing things like engine mounts. They don't get to make changes to the engine.

The chassis group may notice the poor location of the oil filter on the trucks and complain to the engine group. The engine group looks into it and comes up with a design that will fix the issue. They both meet with another group that's in charge of manufacturing costs, and that group shoots the idea down because it would cost too much money and disrupt the manufacturing process. They say they don't want to make a different engine for the trucks alone.

Welcome to Engineering.

For those that change their own, I suggest a cut 2 liter bottle with some hose on the end going to your tub. the filter drops in the 2 liter bottle and the oil drains to the tub. Not ideal but it's much cleaner.
