HELP!!!!

I'm going to order my replacement tires next week and I am seriously stuck here.

Decided hardcore on the Open Country ATII…been reading about the New Open Country R/T but they only come in 33x12.5 and 35x12.5 for the stock 20" wheel.

I'm running stock suspension, no lift, no spacers, no level…and have no plans to change that fact.

So…I'm stuck between the 275/65/20 and the 285/55/20.

The LT275/65 is stock width (11") but offers a 34.1" overall dis vs the stock 33'…so a small, free lift there. The tread is the medium aggressive offering in the ATII. Weight on the tire is 57lbs.

The 285/55 offers a 11.7" width but is 32.4" tall so actually a .6" drop on height. BUT…it's wider and comes in the extreme tread pattern. It weighs in at 59 lbs so no big difference there (I cannot find weight on the crap stockers BTW).

I doubt either will cause any rubbing issues so that's not a problem. I guess I can chose between stock width/better height or wider/shorter/more aggressive tread.

Any help here? I really want to get them ordered this week...

FYI for winter tires, you're better to have narrow tires. They will tend to cut down to the grippy stuff (pavement) instead of floating you over snow which is what wider tires will do.

I'm leaning towards the 285/55 myself. And yes on the winter setup...bought my truck Feb of '14...the stock tires are horrible in the snow. According to perdictions, winter is supposed to be a ******* again.

What?? Where are you?? Another miserable winter??? Oh boy, thats not what I wanted to hear, not with the way summer raced on by.
I'm getting winter tires myself, but I'm going the narrower way, going down to 18" in a 265.
Btw, OP, I say go with the wider tire, always looks good with a wider set of meats. To me anyway.

Illinois.

It's been a strange 12 months here. It was a silly cold winter for us, some record breaking temps. We came .5" of snow away from breaking our all time record of 56" of snow winter 2010/11 (which broke the previous record winter of 1976/77).

It was seriously cold, and tons of snow. I managed through two nasty storms in the Ram after getting it in Feb but both times is was in 4wd and those stock RSA tires are terrible. Hell, they're even bad when it rains, let alone snow.

The 285/55 being .6" shorter, it will only manifest in a drop of .3" overall...I wish Toyo would offer a 285/60 or 285/65 but they don't. You have to go up to a 295 to get the height back and I fear a +20mm width over stock would rub with stock suspension.

So...285 it is...

I have the stock tires on stock rims 265 60 r20 Goodyear wrangler hp I believe without getting up and looking but here in Michigan we had a record winter my area had over 70" of snow and record cold temperatures and I know someone from Canada will chime in and be like pssh that's summer for us lol jk but with the winter we had and living out in back country roads that do not get plowed and 4+ft of snow drifts I never got stuck once but when I do get new tires I'm probably going to go for the thinner tires just to be ready for another winter like we had last year

It doesn't surprise me…they're P rated. Mine only have 5K on them, I'm going to save them just in case.

I still find it interesting that the put passenger rated tires on a full size truck with the towing rating they have...

The weight ratings of P rated tires are more than sufficient for the tow ratings. Most in the stock size are rated for 2601 lbs, while the highest weight capacity of a 1500 is 6900 lbs. I decided to stick with the stock size Toyo AT IIs and they only weigh 43 lbs.

Go 285 60 20, wrangler duratracs, 33.5inches tall, I love mine so much, best tires I've ever owned, they are aggressive enough, quiet on highway, best tires I've driven in winter with, still look cool, I recommend them to everyone who comes through my shop, and mine lasted 90 000km...

Possibly I'm shooting myself in the foot on this one...but I no longer buy any goodyear tires. I have had them over the years and never had a good experience with them.

I got a few prices locally on the OCIIs today and the 285/55 came in at $100 more installed than the 275/65...so 285 it is, I'm cutting the check tomorrow.

i would go 275/65 or 275/60 and save some money. i personally couldnt justify spending more to loose height and gain tire weight. the 10mm difference in width wont be very noticeable anyway.

i was never a goodyear fan either but I will likely never run another tire then the duratrac now, best tire ive ever had, keep in mind im in northern ontarion where we crazy winters also and I use my truck in the bush lots and lots of gravel roads, I also run the 285/60/20, I find 285 the perfect width, wide enough to look good and not too wide to compromise winter driving, if I wasn't in the bush so much I would of likely tried the open coutry at2's though, but the more aggressive lug pattern and the reputation of the duratrac around here is what sold me and never once regretted my decision, please make sure to update your experience with the at2's as ive heard great things about them also, if I had the money to throw around id buy a set in 295/65/20 to test to see how they perform in the conditions I use my truck in just to see but that's not the case lol

agreed, out of the 2 choices I would of went 275/65 for the extra side wall

The issue with this exact tire is that there is a vast difference between 275/60, 275/65 and 285/55.

The 275/60 is P rated and has a 13/32 tread depth and a lesser ply rating. 43lbs/tire.

The 275/65 is LT rated and has a 16/32 tread depth, 10-ply. 57lbs/tire

The 285/55 is also LT rated but comes with their "xtreme" tread pattern which they say is deeper than the standard LT, also 10-ply. 59lbs/tire.

I really do not want a P rated tire that throws out the stock size. So...it boils down to the two, thus the point of this thread. For some reason, Toy lists the width difference between the 275 and 285 as 11" -vs- 11.7". So although it may be listed at +10mm width, if their calc is right, it is more like a 17.8mm difference.

The height difference between stock and and the 275/65 is +1.1". So...a .55" difference in ride height once it is actually on the truck.

My "out the door" price BTW was $1436 for the 285/55 and $1315 for the 275/65. So $115 more for the 285 (which is understandable given the tread difference). The weight difference is +8lbs between the two, so that's basically a wash.

I really am torn between the two...thus my reason for starting the thread.

The issue is however...I'm going to get a cert check here in about an hr, so I really need to make a decision.

according to toyo, the 275/65/20 and 285/55/20 have the same tread depth. 275/65/20 will look funny without a level, imo. 285/55/20 will probably ride worse then the 275/65/20 due to less sidewall to absorb bumps, especially now that your going to a e tire. thats why i suggested sticking with stock size or go up in diameter slightly. if your dead set on an e-rated tire, im not sure what else to say. i personally would go up and get a small level to compensate, but thats just me.

Aaarggg...this is what gets me.

I keep focusing on the "Xtreme" tread portion of the 285/55.

I had decided on the 275/65 last winter but put it off because spring came and I thought I'd run the stockers this summer. Now that summer is winding down, I figured it best to get a set before the Oct/Nov rush sets in.

I've been sitting here chewing on it all morning...

Still not sure.

*EDIT*

the deed is done, put in an order for the 275/65/20...as I was going to originally. I'll get them on and beat on them for a few months and chime back in.

Thanks again for all of the help guys!
