Hi everyone I are a 06 dodge ram 2500 5.9 diesel. my temperature gauge starting rising the past couple of days. While I was driving today. It got hot and check gauge light came on. But I can touch the Radiator cap and it's cold. I was thinking it might be a faulty gauge. I did have the Thermostat replaced by the dealer. When I had it flushed. Due to not having alot of heat. I'm not losing any coolant. Just wanted to see if anyone else had the same problem. Before start replacing parts. Thank you..

The radiator being cold could be a bad water pump or the thermostat is stuck closed.
Do you have any heat in the cab?

Sometimes I do. I also might have a bad heater core.. Or heat duck issue. What I Mean by that it blows out cold on your face and feet on the driver side but when. It's on the defrost it's hot / warm on both sides.

I agree with crash68. If the top of the radiator is cool to the touch when your gauge is saying the engine is hot, it's very likely the water pump isn't circulating water through the radiator, which means pump or thermostat. I'm going to assume you checked for moisture in the oil and oil in the water so you can rule out the head gasket. Is the water level in the resevoir correct? Good luck and keep us posted.

Sorry should of stated this in the frist post. Down fall it doesn't Stay hot. The minute you pull over temp starts to drop.. I will replace the water pump along with the Thermostat... antifreeze has no signs of oil and oil is not milkey.. antifreeze is full. I haven't needed to add any. Oil is full as well. Doesn't burn or leak any fluids.. truck is all stock. No upgrades.

Now I am convinced more than ever that it's the thermostat not opening completely and restricting the flow. Water pumps as a rule usually leak out the weep hole when the seals go which is usually right after the bearings have disintegrated. They also tend to squeal a lot as they die an ungraceful death. I'd start with the thermostat before I did the pump, but that's just me, Good luck.

Also, just another thought here, make sure your radiator isn't clogged up.

Update this morning. I let the engine run for an hour. I went and checked the temp gauge and it said over 200 degrees. Popped the hood. I had no pressure on Radiator cap and Radiator was cold. I felt the coolant and it was Luke warm so I left the cap off. And let it run for 2 hours. Went back out and the temp was under 195 degrees. Engine ran the hole time at high idel.. due to cold weather. Coolant level dropped a little. But I am getting all sorts of heat. Before i had very little heat. Topped off the Radiator. put the cap back on. Let it run for awhile. Temp stayed under 200.. shut it off. I will check the coolant tomorrow. I didn't want to drive it today due to the roads are nasty. Didn't want to risk of wrecking the truck.. i will keep everyone updated tomorrow. Thank you..

Hi everyone. I drove the truck yesterday and didn't over heat till i hit 70 mph .after driveing 45 minutes Then started to slowly rising to 245 degrees. I pulled over checked the cap and it was cold again pulled the cap off took a Risk and no pressure On the cap. stuck my finger in the radiator and coolant was Luke warm. I drove it the today never over heated. But still no pressure. On the cap. No blow by. coolant level has not dropped I pulled the radiator cap off at 200 degrees. No pressure again on the cap. I have pictures to show the temp with the radiator cap off. Would this be a bad cap. Or should I still replace the water pump. Like some of you mentioned before. I am just trying to cover all bases. Before I start buy parts. I never had a engine have. no pressure on the radiator cap. at normal temp. That's confusing me.

after the engine reaches operating temperature
you should see some water moving in the radiator

If i recall correctly, when you lift the hood, the radiator is fully exposed on your year Dodge Ram, if you could borrow or rent a heat sensing gun, you could check for hot & cold spots

If you have a Real Radiator Shop in your area, they could tell you real quick what is wrong with your system.
When i say a Radiator Shop, i am not thinking of a auto parts store or a regular garage.
I mean a real radiator shop that only works on radiators & A/C

Bad fan clutch? Not saying it wasn't bad too, but your earlier symptoms didn't sound like a fan clutch.

Sounds like you are experiencing component jealousy syndrome. You know, that's where you replace one part, and all of the other associated parts get jealous and start failing. Expect your tensioners to start going next.

I know right. Thought it was a thermostat issue at 1st and I replaced it and it seemed to be fine after that and then I replaced the water pump then when spring time/ warm weather I was unable to keep the engine cool. Unless I was driveing it down the road and letting it idea. Cooled down pretty fast that's when I notice the clutch fan issue. But I had replace the clutch fan again today. It went again. And now I am throwing a engine code po967 Shift solenoid A low voltage. Engine light came on in the car wash. That's the code it popped up. Now I am trying to fix that problem. If anyone nows how to fix it.
