Hey Guys,

Been a bit since I've last posted on here. Life has been in the fast lane, been around the states, and heading to another country in a few weeks for work. I picked up a second job to help save some extra cash for my next truck, but while I've been doing that, my current broke.

I drove to my brothers place which is 75 miles or so away from where I live. No code from when I started it up, but when he went to go do my oil change for me (I baked him Cheesecakes for it). The code popped up. My brother was unfamiliar with it, and the mechanics on site weren't familiar with it either.

Code: P1004 - Short Runner Valve Control Performance

I'm not sure what this is, or if I can replace it. The only thing I've done differently in the last 2 weeks was haul 3 horses, and climbed a big hill while the wind was blowing. I took it slow, steady, extra space between cars, and babied my truck quite a bit.

I've got the rest of today, and tomorrow off (8/5 & 8/6), I have a ride to work but I'm wanting more information on this. What caused it, is there something I can do to avoid this, or is it just something that happens. My truck is still running, but I was advised to not drive it unless its absolutely necessary to do so. My dealership (Dodge) is 2 miles from where I live. I plan on walking home if need be. I have extended warranty for another 13k miles on it. I was hoping the code was for the transmission, I'd love a new one within the next 13k miles :p

I've learned a great deal from you guys, and I'm stoked to learn more. From what I can understand is it's a "Bypass" in the air intake that allows for a quicker injection. Not a car guy, so my wording is bad, haha.

Short runner valve is a valve in the intake manifold that changes the length of the intake runners for better high rpm performance. Short runners benefit high rpm power, while longer runners benefit low rpm torque.

The only thing you might notice is slightly less power in the higher rpm band.

It’s located at the back of the intake manifold, it’s not easy to get at. Could be the valve itself is sticking, the actuator, wiring or a faulty PCM.

Thanks for the explanation, Tach_tech. I'm going to be taking it to a shop. The extended warranty should cover everything except the diagnostic fee, which sucks because I can tell them what it is without them doing anything.

They’ll still have to diagnose what exactly is failed though. That’s what the diagnostic fee is for. Only takes a couple minutes to retrieve the code, then they’ll have to do the actual diag.

Yeah, I know. It still hurts to pay $150 for it. Especially when you're trying to save for a new Dodge, haha. Thanks again for the help!

No worries, I use my truck like it's supposed to be. I haul horses, pigs, and cows. I'm honestly surprised more stuff hasn't broken in the 2 years i've owned it. Sounds good! Thanks for reaching out! I hope the Error Code stays because Route 66 won't authorize the repair if they don't have proof.
