Payload capacity problem solved

My 2013 Ram Laramie was rated to tow up to 8400 lbs . When I subtracted our 32 foot Cherokee's hitch weight of 770 lbs from the max allowable weight (on the yellow door sticker)of only 1070 lbs it left only 300lbs for me , DW and the dog . Add in around 50-70 lbs for the WDH , and it just wasn't enough legally . I towed it a couple of times like that and it had plenty of pulling power and stopping ability with all the temps staying well within operating range . Being over on payload just kept bugging me so I fixed it with an easy trip to the dealer . A couple of hours later and I nearly tripled my payload capacity and all I had to do was sign a few papers .

I traded for a 2500 with 6.4 Hemi

Now you will upgrade the trailer, and be too close for a 2500. Then comes a 3500 SRW. Then another trailer upgrade followed by a DRW 3500.

Don’t be a traitor. The CTD is a lot better engine than a duramax and Ram has a larger C/C

I know I know but that new L5P is great and the ride is so much better in a Chevy. I had a Cummins before my 1500 and loved it other than it rode like a tank.

Congrats on the new truck hope you enjoy it and that it serves you well. I think a person can buy a new truck for any reason or no reason at all as long as he can pay for it.

That said I want to address some all too common towing miss conceptions in this thread for the benefit of especially other readers. First the TT hitch weight isn’t fixed at 770 LBS. With that TT which I’m assuming is over 5K wet Ram recommends a WDH. With a WDH TW including the hitch itself is dynamic not static. So hitch weight including the hitch is spread between your steer, drive, and TT axles and is measured by scale results of loaded TV less unloaded TV.

With hitch adjustment and WD in TV and TT TW will vary normally from 10 to 17% of wet TT weight. And should always be adjusted to be within 10 to 15 percent AND so that you are not exceeding drive axle weight and if possible or generally so that you are not exceeding GVWR.

So if your wet TT weighed 6k your TW could put between 600 & 1,020 pounds on your TV axle weights or toward your GVWR. GVW is the legality or more so Mfg recommendation part not the related but different payload sticker.

If you have no scale result you really don’t know if it was legal or not. And you can’t fix what isn’t broke. But you can still revel in and enjoy your new truck no justification needed.

If that seems like I’m splitting hairs it’s not. Process for for estimating what you can tow and process for what a TV will tow safely & with stability is much like a math problem wrong process gets wrong result.

The same 1/2 ton TV & 7K plus TT goes from skittish & dangerous to stable & safe having to with proper set up. It’s concretely determinable on the scales. The process of which is for another thread but I can tell you it initially & generally has little to do with the GVWR.

I was camping with a buddy last year and he said some light on his dash came on that was an arrow pointing at his bed. Hmmm. It got me thinking - what was the payload on his Ram 1500 that he was using to tow a 30' trailer and a bed full of supplies. The same 1070#. It took me all night and many beers to convince him he had the wrong truck for the job. All he kept saying, "But my truck is rated to tow 10,000#"

Excellent move! Congrats. I went to my truck from a 1500 Silverado and I'd never go back. I don't blame you one bit. My truck has over 3100 lbs of pay and hardly squats when I hook up my TT and that's before I engage the weight bars

To the poster considering a 2500 Chevy, think long and hard about it. The Chevys have a lot of issues. I'd not want another one. The duramax/Allison is a good combo though, but no better than the cummims/Aisin in my opinion.

We both got the same truck, in opposite colors, for the same reason! I love the sport center console trim on the 18s! I got rid of my sport 20s for 18s and a little bigger tire. Nice truck!
