Hey everyone, let me preface this by saying once I’m home I will take my truck into the mechanic to get checked out professionally...so yesterday while vacationing in the PA mountains I was a bit foolish in a rapid decent down a back road mountain side and pretty much rode my brakes down the entire hillside for what I could guess was a couple miles. When I reached the bottom my brakes were incredibly spongy and you could smell them burning. This morning, though I’m not sure if it’s just in my head now, the truck feels sluggish almost like the brakes are sticking a little and even after being parked all night the wheels still stink of burning brakes.

Like I said once I get home I’ll take t to my mechanic and get his opinion but what are the chances that I totally f’d my brakes up?

How old are the brakes? It could be nothing, or it could be you are due for pads, rotors and might have a sticking caliper that was aggravated by the usage.

The caliper sticking is what worries me, I don’t want to risk damaging anything else or get anyone hurt.

My car does that all the time because I drive like a maniac.

U have to get home, so drive cautiously and consciencly. Always a have a back up plan if something goes wrong.

Oh ya don't tell your wife.

If they are sticking the calipers will need to be cleaned and lubed or may just even need replacement. Rotors may be warped and pads should be inspected. If you have to replace the rotors just do the pads at the same time as the pads are inexpensive. Make sure your mechanic thoroughly checks and lubes the rotors if he does not replace them. If he does not do a good job it will happen again and you will cook another set of brakes.

Let us know if we can help at all. We offer brake parts and this would be a good excuse to upgrade the pads and rotors to something better!

Drive it a bit and then get out and feel the rims....if one or more is considerably hotter than the others that's a sign of a stuck caliper. How many miles on everything? Especially the fluid? It could be nothing or you could be due for brakes. No way to really know unless I looked at them but the mileage is the first question I'd ask. I ride PA hills multiple times a year and tow 10k pounds up and down them so I know the brake issues but other than smelling them a time or two I've never damaged anything.

Moving very slow on flat pavement, put it in neutral and roll to a stop. If a caliper is stuck you should be able to tell if it stops abruptly or very gradually. Checking the temperature as suggested will help also.
