Bought first Ram. 2013 Ram 1500 with 120k miles. Love it BUT, only after 4 days, electric power steering went out. Dealer says need a new rack. $3000!! Guy I bought it from has a great rep. He has agreed to help. Only problem is there is such a demand for this item, dealer says he they can’t get one until Oct. Says my model does not qualify for any recall or extended warranty. My question is, if this part is in such a demand, why does it not qualify?

"Recall" is generally reserved for safety issues. So if the rack quit and someone crashes and gets hurt/killed, the guberment pays attention. Enough of those incidents and recalls happen. If it's not a safety issue but a frequently occurring problem, "campaigns" can be issued, normally during the warranty period but sometimes they will extend the warranty. But...9yrs old and 120k on the clock...Ummm...Not happening. I's worn out. They don't last forever.

Those things are absolute garbage. Enough so that theirs a compagnie in Alberta that remans them... lol...

Rip that **** off and put on the 2012 one.

It's a dealer out of Myrtle Beach that also sells parts online. They located a few NEW units available. All of my local dealers told me they weren't available and Rockauto uses Cardone to rebuild them and Cardone sent my unit back and said they couldn't rebuild it.
Then unit number that was original to my model is not available anymore but there are multiple numbers that are now compatible.

Wow, how sure are you?

RAM, GM, Ford, and likely the offshore nameplates have been using EPS for many years. Millions of vehicles without issues but now they are absolute garbage. How did you come to that conclusion?

I would think (hope) after a while there'll be a number of how-to videos to make the EPS more reliable or at least fix the main failure points. I'm surprised there aren't already.

I don't know. In all my years working in automotive, I've never seen a failure report on ESP. A good friend worked for Delphi which became Nextsteer, one of the leading manufacturers of EPS. If there were issues, he would have said something, he is like that.

one Ram owner back in the spring removed the controller inspection cover and water poured out. The inside contacts were corroded that solder to the board. The controller itself appeared good, as it is coated in a protective plastic spray (Conformal coating). But the main terminals were badly corroded.

He said it appeared, to his eye, the water appeared to be entering on the tie rod boot end. But what could also cause water or condensation build-up inside the controller housing region could be a result of 'breathing'. In other words, when the assembly warms up during use ...from the EPS motor, controller heat and/or radiated heat from the radiator/engine, it could cause the air inside the EPS controller area to condense on warm areas either on the aluminum housing or the board itself. When the vehicle is parked and the EPS assembly cools, cooler (and more moist) air enters into the controller area. The process continues and repeated condensation results in moisture build up. Just like can happen in a dual-pane house window when the seal fails.

Other issues reported with Ram EPS units include the steering (center) being knocked out off-center by a major impact like a big pothole (knocked a tooth off??), possible issues with the electric motor and bushings that become worn/damaged. Someone on the forum mentioned there was a belt on the motor too ..a possible source of issues (I don't know if it's true, or if there *is* a belt on the electric motor ..but an owner or two reported it).

But the most common seems to be with the controller ..likely moisture build-up. Some have put a heat gun to the controller area on cold winter mornings and gotten the P/S to work (while it's warm).

Where is the inspection cover? Kinda want to remove it and check mine....

There's a square-ish portion on the EPS unit with a cover. The circuit board should be behind that ...if yours looks like the unit below.
