Hi

Just curious what’s the proper output voltage of the alternator when charging a battery.

I’m getting a reading of 14.6V.

Just wondering if that’s correct.

Thanks

Alex

13.8 to 14.2 is the typical voltage you'll see with the engine running. It may slightly higher depending on the battery charge and/or ambient temperature, so unless the voltage goes over 15 volts I wouldn't be concerned.

That’s a normal voltage. What you want to pay more attention to on your alternator is the duty cycle it’s running. A normal duty cycle is in between 30-40%, when they start getting higher you’ll notice your alternator not being able to hold the charge on your battery
