Question about Drilled & Slotted rotors

compared to standard rotors (all other things being equal) do you forfeit some braking/stopping power with them?

Opposite of that....you gain stopping ability.

No you will have better performance. Should have a noticeable difference. Idk why they don’t offer them standard on all vehicles. There is a layer of gas that is created from the heat during braking that gets trapped between your rotors and pads. The drilled holes give the gas somewhere to escape giving you better contact. And I believe the slots are for throwing water off the rotor in wet conditions.

Slots and holes increase heat shedding, which too much of will cause brake friction to go down.

Once the pads and disk get to operating temp, anything more diminishes effectiveness.

As a side benefit slots and holes also help avoid disk warping.

Do they wear the pads faster all edges of the holes would be like knifes like a cheese grater?

Not at all there aren’t any raised edges for the pads to catch. It is all perfectly flat/smooth.

What about small rocks or mud getting caught

Well I never took my charger (with drilled and slotted rotors) mudding, but I certainly never had any dirt, rocks, or other debris get stuck in them. After about 3 years I did have to just push a drill bit through all the holes to clear out the build up of brake dust that accumulated over the years and plugged the holes.

I noticed my brake performance was faded when I slammed on the brakes to miss a deer and the ABS hardly kicked in which was unusually. So I inspected them. Found the brake dust build up cleared it and I was back to the same brake performance I was used to.

As for the mud I’m pretty sure the slots are designed to throw stuff like that off of your rotors. The pads slide the mud or dirt into the slots and then when the pad clears the angle of the slots cause the dirt to fling off.

Dirt bikes, atvs and utvs been running them for a very long time since it increases braking power with smaller rotors. I've never once ran into this issue or heard of it. Worst I've had done was a rock got stock against the rotor and caliper but the brake system is very open.

I just installed powerstop drilled/slotted front rotors and their pads and I’m unhapoy with the braking performance.

I’ve bled and re-bled the brakes and I’m not thrilled with my stopping power. OEM stock was better.

Cross drilled and slotted are better. My Charger would eat up pads and rotors until the last set of rotors and pads I got, which are drilled & slotted. No issues.

When it comes time for brakes on the Ram, will be contacting GotExhaust….

ill be doing my brakes within the next month. im a little concerned about the break in procedure. i will be doing them at my house (out in the woods) i have about 100 foot driveway thats up a little hill. at the bottom is a stop sign to a 35mph road for 2 miles. then a 55mph road. so i will have to use the breaks a bit before i can do the 4/5 hard braking it asks for. any potential problems braking like tgat before the hard braking?

I did power stop brakes and rotors. Drilled and slotted.

Did break in procedures, brakes still felt less than OEM.

Changed fluid in master cylinder with a 50cc syringe, taking all fluid out and then replaced fluid. Then I bled each wheel until I got fresh fluid out.

Had them on about 5 k.

in addition to the above, ive
adjusted the parking brakes per the manual and started using the parking brake every time I turn the ignition off when parking.

My brakes now stop as good or better than when new.

I wouldnt worry too much about but I do recommend not doing any hard braking to a stop until you do the bedding process. I have a similar situation at my house, long driveway, live in the woods, twisting roads one way and a stop sign the other way. did many brake jobs and never had an issue.
