I own a 2500 with the 6.7 Diesel. I tow a 9000 lbs camper with a tongue weight of about 1100 lbs. I own a DiamondBack HD bed cover and want to load my ATV's on top. weight of ATV's is about 1000 lbs. My payload max is about 2900 lbs. Question is, does tongue weight count toward payload and will I hurt my truck if I do this.

Yes, it counts toward your payload. That’s why the wife and I have this:

With our ATV my tongue weight is right at 1000lbs and payload on my truck is 2400.
It won’t hurt your truck to be right at payload, but with that much weight in the back you’ll need a weight distribution and possibly airbags.

Even with a WDH I'd be concerned about going over the drive axle rating. Your payload rating is a combined rating of drive and steer axles.

He’s got a front axle rating of 6000 lbs, and a rear axle rating of 6500 lbs, sooo... he’s got a payload rating of 12,500 lbs??

Unless you weigh it, you don't know. Load it up and Cat scale it. Then you vam figure it out..

I have a Tradesman 2500 that weights 7700 lbs empty, leaving only 2300 lbs of payload. I highly doubt that your truck only weighs 7100 lbs with the diesel engine. You might want to double check those numbers. I'd be willing to bet your payload is closer to 2200 or 2300 lbs.

And yes, any weight above and beyond your empty truck weight counts against your payload.

Gentlemen, thanks for all the input. Facts about my situation. I have a 2017 ram 2500 with 6.7.

My camper weighs 8900, I use a weights scale hitch which shows my tongue weight is about 1100 lbs (how do I reduce my tongue weight) I’ve tried moving ball up and down but it doesn’t change much.

Front axle says 6k gawr and rear says 6.5k gawr. Total gvwr says 10k. Atv1 weighs 636lbs. Atv 2 weighs 272. Worst case scenario I have 900+ in atvs on top my bed with tongue weight of 1100 lbs pulling balance of weight from camper behind me. Book says my payload is 2972lbs in bed.

Am I safe to load my atvs and pull the camper without endangering my family or hurting my truck.

I’m just trying to maximize my family fun. With toys that I have.

Thanks and any input is greatly appreciated.

The only way to pull weight off of that tongue is to use a weight distribution set up. However, it doesn’t magically disappear, it gets shared between both truck axels and the trailer axel. While it will help with towing your trailer, it doesn’t help much with the excess weight of your ATVs. While you may be fine on your numbers in total, the actual weight on that rear axel is going to be close to 6000lbs, while the front axel might only have 3500 or so. That’s fine if you don’t have a trailer, but it gets dangerous when you have to make sudden stops and turns with a trailer behind you.

As another poster already mentioned, the best thing you can do is take the rig to the scale and see the actual weight on each axel. You could then try a weight distribution rig to see if you can put some of that weight on your front axel and trailer axel. If the numbers are in line with ALL of your ratings then it’s really going to boil down to how comfortable it feels to you.

Is your truck a crew cab? 4x4? That payload seems high for a 2500 6.7.

Please provide us with a photo of your yellow drivers door jamb sticker. My 17 tradesman, CC, 2500 6.4 hemi has a payload over 3100 lbs. I highly doubt your diesel payload is only 200 lbs less than my trucks is.

Unless you have a regular cab 2x4 or something? Most 2500 diesels are in the low 2000s payload. Check that sticker.

I suppose it's calculated differently on 2500's. My axle ratings are 3900 front and rear. If you subtract my truck weight it's damn near spot on to what my payload is.

The way they assign the payload rating is GVWR minus the curb weight of the truck (as it rolled off the assembly line) with a tank of gas, that’s it. Same for all vehicles.

The sticker on the door jam that says “the combined weight of occupants and cargo should never exceed...” is the payload for your specific truck. Everybody’s payload from the factory can be a little bit different depending on how the truck is optioned.

Get a WDH with built in sway control and spring bars rated for 1,000 pounds or better.

You are going to set your hitch per its instructions and to scale results.

First Weigh your empty truck, you get front & rear axle weights and total weight.

Next weigh loaded truck & trailer. Then adjust hitch & load in truck and trailer to best restore your steer weight so that it is at least what it was when the truck was unloaded.

That’s the main thing just do that and you will have a safe stable tow. No worries at all about truck capability here.

If you have trouble getting front axle weight restored post up and their is tips & tricks.

So your payload is 2,09
I own a 2500 with the 6.7 Diesel.

Ok, so to answer this question, your payload is 2,095 pounds according to the sticker on your door. It may be lower depending on what else you have done to your truck, so the best thing to do would be is to put it on a scale. If your tongue weight is 1,100, that does count toward your payload, so you have another 1,000 left for the remainder, such as your passengers, additional gear, and your ATV.
