I've been truck shopping (slowly) for the last few years. I've narrowed my search to a 2017 RAM 1500 Sport or a 2017 Tundra Platinum. I realize this is a RAM forum so I don't expect a lot of love for the Tundra BUT....anyone have experience with both? Likes/dislikes from a comparison standpoint?

I do like the RAM better for my needs but I also prefer the reliability and overall service that comes with a Toyota.

Toyota isn't any more reliable than the competition.

I work at a Toyota plant, we use all of their vehicles around the plant. Honestly, the only one I'd buy is the Rav4. The rest are falling apart weirdly and prematurely, including the Tundras.

It's also interesting to see the parking lot during production hours. All employees get discounts at Toyota, yet there are very few Toyota's being driven by employees...

My good friend had a Toyota Tundra. It had it's share of problems with interior dash rattles and a leaking valve cover gasket.

Now, my friend is Asian. So, you can imagine how hard it would be to get him away from his Toyota. He and I were looking at trucks and started really liking mine.

He ended up trading it in for a 2014 Ram 2500 Cummins Megacab with the BAP group! Awesome truck.

He absolutely loves it. He has repeatedly told me how much nicer this truck is build quality this his Toyota ever was. I think his was a 2012 or 2013.. I can't recall. It was a newer Tundra.

The ONLY thing he said he misses, is the Tundra's rear window roll down. The entire window rolls down. But that is it!

I think pulling an Asian from a Toyota speaks volumes! :)

Buy whichever truck you like most. All have some issues here and there, but for the most part, all these trucks are very good. Too much at stake ( profits ) by companies to produce crappy trucks. Each truck will excel in certain categories and be "less than" in others. Buy the one that fits how you will use it.
For me, the ram 1500 fits my needs. Incredibly comfortable driving and able to tow the loads i require.

I've been driving rams since 1996, and i've had relatively few problems with them. I did lose 2nd gear on my '96 just 2k miles out of warranty though. I traded my '96 on a 2004 1500 with the hemi. I put just shy of 219k miles on it, and had it in shop twice for repairs. A friend of mine bought one of those Tundras, and his truck did not hold up as week as my ram. I recently bought a 2017 2500 with the 6.4 hemi, and gave my 2004 Ram to my daughter, and it is probably approaching 22.5k miles.

I am convinced that if you regularly change oil & fluids, don't rag on your truck all the time, and generally take care of it, it will take good care of you. I felt like I was losing a good friend when I gave away my old truck, but I am happy that it is still in the family, and it is now taking good care of my daughter too. I'm sure either truck will take care of you, but IMO, the ram if by far cooler and BADDER...:naughty:

Toyota tundras are nice no doubt, but I wanted the 8 speed that the ram has. Barely notice the shifts and better gas mileage.

I think either truck will be a solid buy i narrowed it down to the same two trucks. I ended up going with the ram because i found the one i wanted for the price i wanted. Plus I felt more comfortable in a ram the interior is top notch. I've been super happy with my choice.

As far as issues go my truck has been I'm the shop a couple times for warranty work already still under 12k miles. Once by previous owner for a axle so I dont know what caused it. Then I had it in to have the instrument cluster replaced and a couple minor interior issues fixed. All relatively minor things imo though.

Also what he said haha. I didn't buy it for either of those reasons but the mileage on my 5.7L 1500 was a pleasant surprise and the 8 speed tranny is nice.

I've been hearing a lot of hoopla about the new titans lately - so I wateched some comparison videos... the pay load and the towing capacity on the new titan with the 5.0 cumins is garbage and the damn thing sells for over 50k.

I have no experience in the Tundra. Ive owned nearly everything but take this with what its worth.

My brother in law works at a Toyota store, ordered a fully loaded white tricoat platinum 4x4 Tundra 2016. Waited almost a year to get it as the build cycles were changing to the new model when he ordered. His old truck was a 2005 GMC Sierra 2500 on 40's. It was a big ol Red neck truck, but now hes older and wanted a more comfortable quiet ride.

Fast forward 2 days after ownership he has a 4 hour trip ahead of him. This trips he has made a 1000 times in his monster truck. He arrived and called me (Im a Ford store manager) and begged me to get him out of the truck. It was the worst trip hes taken. His lower back and legs were killing him to the point he took someone elses in the familys car home and had one of his kids get his truck, who also complained to the end of the world. After 27 days of ownership he traded in for another truck. He said the seats and lumbar stood no chance to make it useable for him.

This story does not bias to an other brand but against the ride quality of the Toyota. He was as happy as man the first and last days anyone buys a boat as those are the only days you enjoy.

He bought another brand new truck, not a Toyota.

I'm in a '16 RAM 1500 Sport now and came out of a '14 Tundra Platinum. Truthfully, overall I enjoy (or enjoyed) both trucks.

The RAM good -- more features, better ride, quieter, more power

The Tundra good -- reliable, more interior room, personally liked the driving position better, resale was great

The RAM bad -- just my experience, but I've had some repair issues with the truck (all warranty, but still more than I ever did with Tundra), less interior room

The Tundra bad -- dated all around, ride poor, lack of features at price point

As I said earlier, both trucks have their pluses and minuses. When I'm up for a new truck, I'll likely look at the Tundra and the RAM again. Both redesigns will be interesting to watch. Given that I'm in the RAM now, I'd say the RAM is ahead of the Tundra at this point in my mind, but that said, there are some thing that I do miss about the Tundra. Hope this helps.

I agree with everyone else for the most part. The tundra is one bad ass looking truck. I looked into them as well when I was in the market for a 1/2 ton. They are definitely expensive but feel bigger than a ram. I felt the ram interior was far superior but I like tundras exterior. I ended up with ram bc of the awesome deal I got and I wasn't disappointed. I ended up upgrading to a 3/4 ton long box bc its hard to fit much of anything in those 5'5" beds. If I had to chose again between a tundra and ram I'd definitely go ram 1500

If you're not in a huge rush to buy right away, the new F150 coming out this fall will have a diesel option and 2 different eco boost engines coupled to a 10 speed trans. Might be worth the wait to give them a look. Interior space is definitely larger on the F150 and overall looks nice. Both trucks you are looking at are very nice but I would agree with most that Toyotas are very 1980s looking on the interiors, not quiet as bad as Chevy lol but still for that kind of money I'd go with the Ram

I just bought a '17 Ram Sport on Wednesday and I owned a '15 Sport a year and a half ago for a little bit.

I love the look of both and I think with the sport hood on the ram looks mean. The tundra overall looks better though on the outside.

The interior is a different story though, the ram wins hands down in every category for me, since you'll spend 100% of the time you're driving in the cab this is pretty important.

The ram is also less money for more features.

I did the same shopping a year ago. Beside Tundras having relatively cheap looking an performing interior, I could not find one close to optioned they way I wanted, unless I also wanted white. No dealers were dealing in our area. The ~equivalent RAM was $6k less money. The ones I test drove were not nearly as fun to drive as the RAM and road porrly, if that is any factor. They are just transportation appliances after all :)

Buts its such a personal and subjective decision, buy the one you like.
