Hello. I’m looking at buying a new 2025 1500 and am considering one with a Rambox. I like the idea of what they can provide, as I have to constantly load and unload tools when helping family and friends. Thinking with the Rambox I can fill of and leave them for whenever needed. But wondering if they’re worth having, since it’s only a 5’7” bed, how much bed space is lost? Can you still haul sheets of plywood, appliances and furniture and most everything you would without the Rambox? Also what about covers? I like the Truxedo soft rollup cover. Had one on my previous truck and current truck. They work really well for me. Wondering if I can put on on a truck with a Rambox? Appreciate all responses.

We’re on our 4th truck with ramboxes. Honestly we wouldn’t buy one without that option. You still have four feet between the wheel wells so you can carry sheets of plywood with no issues. You only lose the little bit of space in front of and behind the wheel wells, which isn’t much on a five and a half foot bed.

But the storage is only half of the usefulness for me. If you also opt for the Bed Utility Group (BUG) you will also get the bed divider. I place it about two feet in from the tailgate when I don’t need to carry long items, and use that space like a trunk.

There are many types of bed covers that work with the rambox bed. I had a Truxedo roll up cover on my previous truck. Currently I have a BakFlip hard tri fold cover for better security.

Most people who complain about the potential space they will loose with the rambox bed are mostly from people who have never had one. The only downside I can see is if you want to use a topper (canopy). You might have trouble finding one that will work with it.

I never owned one, but test drove with and without. I thought it'd be handy for recovery gear, air compressor, etc.

But I also haul things that aren't dimensional lumber. Firewood and the like, were bed volume matters even if it's pockets around the wheel wells. I also would have really had trouble going to a stubby bed.

2nd rambox for me. I just posted my bedrug info in the diy section. This is what I trimmed from the standard bed rug. See photo. Shows how little are you lose and gain so much more usable secure storage. I get the firewood scenario though. I got a bak s4x. Had a factory trifold on my last ram.

I had them on my 1500. I loved the utility of them. My boxes were always full of tools, tow straps, etc..

My only gripe was that little bit of bedspace lost around the wheel wells for the same reason that Doc mentioned above. Carried plywood just fine. I'd consider them again though.

Really appreciate all the responses. Sounds as though the majority really enjoy having them.

I always wondered if they kept the contents dry in a rain storm? I can remember the older trucks with them and tools getting soaked. Just wondering if they have gotten any better.

Like any hole in sheet metal that's sealed with a rubber gasket, they can leak. There have been threads about that in the past. But it's fairly rare that they leak. And there are ways to fix that.

I seriously considered this option when I was in the market for a new Dodge/Ram. I could see the value in having tools/supplies constantly handy instead of unloading the bed every time you thought about "questionable" security. When it came down to it, I couldn't justify the added $$$ just for bragging rights about my built-in beer cooler/ice chest. Bottom line, if ya want it, get it!

And as a bonus... The cargo divider works as a bed extender also... (Just add missing pegs from 4th Gen).

Pretty sure on the 2019 or 2020+ you need to buy the bed bolts, but yes it os awesome
Correct. No 5th gens come with the mounting pegs to make the bed divider a bed extender. But the provisions are there to install them. Lots of sources to buy them...dealership, amazon, ebay, etc. When looking up the part numbers be sure to list the truck as a 2018 or earlier. Those will not come up in a parts search for any 5th gen.

Edit: This information is available in other threads but I figured I'd add the information here as well since it was brought up. Here are the mounting pegs needed for the bed extender. You'll need two of each...

On my 2nd one with the Ram Boxes, first one was a 2016 with a 6'4" bed, my 2024 only has the 5'7" bed, but just as useful!

I can understand the bit about the firewood if you have an HD. But I know with our 2020 Limited having a payload of just over 1000 lbs, I exceed that payload if I fill the bed with firewood even with the rambox bed.
