Random ETC warning

I have gotten this warning (see pics), a couple times in the last 2 months. However I never see the warning indicator on the actual dash. Could it be the Pedal Commander and the updated CanBus system on the 2018 RAM’s?

On a side note..... my display looks different than urs ... I have a 2015 with the big screen 8.4 etc but font and icons are different on urs ? Is there an update? I’ve had one.. or is it customizable in the settings ?

The display was changed in 2018. My 2017 was different also. Not sure about an update.

No on the Eco mode. I tried it on my 2017 and had that issue. I’ve got it set on City +2 for the winter.

I see this all the time. Clean the throttle body. **I don't have a pic right now of this but trust me here. *Without putting the keys in the ignition!* Go pop the hood, disconnect the air sensor plug, remove the air tube to the throttle body, and carefully clean inside the throttle body where the round flap meets the sides of the throttle body. You likely have some gunk there and it will cause the flap to not fully close, or because sticky cause a momentary pause before it opens. We're talking an effect that when the ecu see's this is a very low voltage/amperage difference and that indication gets thrown.

Be smart, don't get anything stuck to the flap or drop anything into the intake, or if not confident enough have a shop do this quick fix. Think of it as plaque along the top of your teeth at the gumline, it's hopefully just a little oil/gunk causing the throttle to stick or blip and toss the notice instead of the hard code.

I saw this on my brand new 2018 1500 with less than 1k miles on the clock. I used remote start on a really cold night and then got caught up for more than 10 minutes so the truck shut itself off before I got outside. Started it back up and got the exact same screens you posted here. No actual dash lights though.

Honesty, I doubt it’s a dirty throttle body with so few miles and only having the truck for three weeks. Probably something else in this case for me at least.

I’m replying to the last two posts (now sure how to double reply on Tapatalk).

I doubt my throttle body is dirty enough at 2,800 miles. I’ve wrenched for fun and as a profession, If it is already that dirty there is a problem I don’t want. I’ll check it if it happens again. If it was dirty, then a catch can would be necessary at minimum.


It did happen after the remote start ran out of time as I got caught up waiting to leave this morning. That’s even stranger IMO!

Interesting that it occurred for both of us after a remote start that expired. Easy way to test the theory is to remote start again and let it run until it shuts down again. I bet this is a software glitch of some kind that will be fixed via a flash update.

I had this in my 08 and it was a dirty throttle body. According to dealer. It was also -35 Celsius outside. I’ve noticed people complain of this in th cold

I’ll be trying to get it to happen again a few different ways. There is no shortage of cold and wanting to remote starting in Chicagoland. 2-4” of snow yesterday and 2-4” coming tonight.

Same here though to a lesser extent, though we are expecting snow overnight into tomorrow AM. I will try to reproduce tomorrow.

I have not had the warnings come up again. I’ve let the remote start time expire and even run it a second time. So far all good. And the vehicle health report just came over all good as well.

Only time will tell!

I have gotten this same warning multiple time on my 2018 Ram. The first time I received a warning via the 8.4 display for both the ETC malfunction and the Engine light like stated above and my truck only had 720 miles on it at the time... cycled the ignition and it disappeared. Since then, I have created a Uconnect account and have been notified about 4 time of an ETC Malfunction via my phone. I have never once received a check engine light or any other indication on my dash. Does anyone have any more info on this?

I think it’s an issue related to remote start timing out. That’s about the only time I’ve had it happen. Now that it’s nice out I just remote start when I’m walking up to the truck. So it never times out.
