Has anyone figured out how to rehear the front diff on these trucks without replacing the diff?

I know it’s w does, but I’m wondering if someone smarter than me has been able to put in their own choice of gears.

Wonder if you can swap out the front carrier and pinion, but ofcourse that just gets you to factory gear sections still.

That’s what I’m wondering. I know you can swap the diff but then you are limited to 3.92 or 3.21. Plus just swapping the ring and pinion would be way cheaper. Someone at a trans shops has to of tried it.

Supposedly some of the ZF front diffs have the ring gear welded to the carrier.I've never opened one up to check though. You can pick up the 3.92 front diffs for usually a couple hundred bucks if you shop around, and it's an easy swap. The front diff has to come out anyways even if you can swap the gears,so by the time you factor in labour and parts,it's cheaper to buy another front diff and swap it.The front diff is an easy swap, once you have the driveshaft unbolted / the axles pulled /the actuator unplugged, there's 7 bolts holding it in.I've swapped my front diff a couple times on my driveway by myself using just a floorjack .There's 3 bolts on the topside of the diff that are a bit of a ***** to get out,but the other 4 are easy to get out with an impact/ long extension/ and a 18mm swivel impact socket. You have a selection of 3.21 / 3.55 /and 3.92 gears in the ZF front diff. The 3.55 geared diffs are the common ones in the trucks with the 6 speed trans, the 8 speed trucks used either 3.21 or 3.92

Yeah I’ve found one at a salvage yard. Truck was rear ended by a Semi, so back half is shot. But front looks brand new, only 3600 miles on that truck.

I wanted to go with 4.56 gears which is why the question. Thanks for the help with removing the old one, as I would be doing it in the drive way as well.

I've done mine 3 times now,and the last time I did it,it took me just over 2 hours from jack-up to jack down by myself. It helps if you do have an extra set of hands to run the floorjack, but if your good with your legs, you can operate the jack yourself while wiggling the diff into place. The 3 bolts on the top are a *****,as Ram loctites them in,so you have to use a wrench to wind them all the way out,and I swear those bolts are long enough to jack the tires off the ground, lol. My truck has long tube headers which makes them even harder to get at,an 18mm gear wrench is handy if you have one,but you can do it with a normal open and box end wrench.Pop the lower balljoint so you can swing the hub out far enough to pop the axles out of the diff, you need a 36mm socket to remove the axle nut if you decide to completely pull the axles, but the last time I did mine,i managed to pry the hub out far enough to pop the axles out of the diff with-out undoing the axle nut

So if I want to put 3.92 gears in my 13 Ram 1500 I gotta do axle swap? New to this one. Just wanted gears in my lifted 1500.

Yes, if you have a 4x4 2013 MY and newer have a welded in carrier, so you have to swap the whole front diff. The rear is standard ring and pinion swap.

I have a 2012 ram 1500 can some one tell me the diffs on my truck. Is it 9.25 on the rear and 8 on the front? Also has anyone done an air locker or just regular locker on these diffs? I can't find much in that department. From what i was told my diffs are some weird ones that ram tried and there is nothing for it.

You have ZF axles as well like these guys. I'm in the process of re-gearing mine right now and Yukon makes gears for the ZF rear and regular 8" front. I got my front diff off eBay for $250 bucks out of a 2010 truck.

It's a simple swap really except the mounting points are different on the older diffs.

No big deal because looking at parts diagrams I need to order a torque plate for 2010 model year and I'll have everything done like factory. No need for a 4" lift or greater and fabricated bracket like other guys have been doing.

Well I was doing some research on the front diff and what not and so I actually thought it through, I don't need to go crazy with having a locker or bigger gears for the front, because the only time I use 4x4 is in the winter and this past winter iIdidn't need it at all. Thank you for the response. It helped. I will probably just re gear the rear end.

If you regear the rear and not the front then Do not use 4wd again.

I would love to do this but what about keeping ABS, traction control, etc. working properly?

No problem with abs, simple addition, but I don't even really know what Traction Control is but I don't know how that would be effected by a solid axle. Something to do with the engine and power to wheels, I don't really know what it accomplishes and/or benefits. I would however not drive a vehicle w/o anti-lock brakes, saved my life at least once. Kept my vehicle going straight in a head on, if I had regular brakes I would have skidded sideways into a 90mph head on = goner.

lmao the only reason I mentioned traction is because after I replaced my steering wheel the light was on in the dash and cruise control didn't work. I use cruise control too often not to have it
