Popped cover off as truck was clanking on slow turns and tires dragging. Metal dust in fluid and about 8 good chunks of metal. Clutch pack on driver side looks broken.

Can I pull the ring and diff assembly by popping axle clips slide them out a bit to pull assembly? Rebuild or replace with new and put back together without needing to replace all the bearings and set all the preloads on the bearings and the ring to pinion spacing?

To me, it seems if I remove the bearing cover plates, c clips on axles, slide them out 2", and pop out the assembly. But I'm a rookie when it comes to diffs and axles.

I don’t think you can do it that way, I’m pretty sure you have to remove pinion and ring and clips to get it out but not 100% sure, but while your in there might as well put new seals and bearings so that way you’ll be good for a long while.

If I was you, I would just replace your rear axle, if you have a 1500 they can be had for as low as $100.

The 9.25” uses threaded preloaders for the bearings instead of shims. Yes you can remove the pin, push the axles in and remove the c clip, take off the bearing caps, but it isn’t going to come out unless you loosen the preloaders. there is a special tool that slides up the tube that fits into the hex of the preloader, it gets torque down to a certain torque to provide the bearing preload. You also have to measure backlash before you do so.

You’ll be money ahead with a junkyard axle.
