Hey All,

Happy Holidays to everyone of course! :)

I am about to purchase a Mag-Hytec Rear diff cover for my 2016 Ram 1500 and I want to put good, nothing to worry about, gear rear diff fluid in it. I was looking at Valvoline since others have said it's worked great for them. I read a post that someone that used Mobile1 had to add the LS additive because his started chattering oddly.

What are you guys' thoughts on Valvoline? Any other brands you guys enjoy? I've heard raves on Royal Purple too, but looks pretty pricey.

My rear diff is a Limited slip one.

Just did the Mag-Hytec myself after regearing front/back from 3:55 to 4:56. I use Redline products. You won't need the antislip additive with Redline. It's in there.

Good luck!

Man, all I have to say is do a search on Royal Purple gear fluid and damage. It fails miserably in regular gear fluid tests along with lucas. If you seen the tests, these two gear fluids you would never buy. I don't really like to call out brands, but the facts are the facts, really bad stuff. The 4x4 boards I'm on for over a decade, RP gear fluid is a cus word, it has many gear fails to it's name on the Ford boards. Most people love m1 gear fluids, likely the best you are going to get for standard duty. If you tow, only redline is going to get you that ester base that really makes a difference. If you look an item up and it doesn't say ester base, then it isn't ester base.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Heard lots of good things about Redline. Although I didn't do a new cover, I replaced my differential fluids with Amsoil Severe Gear. It has some limited slip it, but not quite enough for my rear LSD. Chattered a bit when making a tight turn in reverse. I added two ounces of the additive, far less than the whole bottle, and that took care of it.

I don't agree with this test, the values they put and way the skewed the test was to highlight their product, but it shows how bad RP and Lucas gear fluids are.

The thing about engine oil is the application is very forgiving, many people run the cheapest oil they can find and get 200k miles out of an engine with normal changing. When you are talking about gears, the opposite holds true, especially in trucks that are used for tow and hauling. It isn't only that test, I can't even tell you how many times I heard a gear fail with RP and a trail ride. You never really know if it is fair to blame an oil under that situation. But when the number starts climbing then you start seeing a correlation. It really is only one brand RP, because not many people even use Lucas in the first place. There is almost no derogatory info on Redline gear fluid, m1, Amsoil, and many others, but when it comes to RP gear fluid either they have been very unlucky or the stuff is junk. I wouldn't chance my diff with that many guys having gear fails using it. The three worst according to that test, RP, Lucas and low and behold Mopar gear fluid. Just saying people just because their is a Mopar tag on something doesn't mean it is a great quality product. Follow science not what the manu says to do. It is your equipment, do some research make an informed decision.

I used this...
Can’t remember how much exactly - 2 Quarts - Right?

Something close to that, maybe 1 3/4's, dunno for sure. That is the right weight for rear diff, front they want 75w85 or close. Did you take the cover off? explain your process. Rlk has a nice write up for gear fluid dyi.

Yeah, sounds about right, bought 2 Quarts and had some leftover.
Didn’t take the cover off (only 34k Miles, very little towing), just drained, put the plug back in and filled back up.
BTW - I’m talking open rear diff here.

Especially if you tow Med to heavy loads.

I assume he means Super Tech which is made by another company FOR walmart.

Normally contract goes to the cheapest bidder.

When I have used Amsoil I have had failures could be coincidence but since I went to Redline things have been perfect. I bought the 75w-140 in a 5 gallon jug and I don’t run any LS modifier when using with Auburn LSD.

Thanks for all the input guys! I had heard of people talking a lot about Redline and enjoying their fluid. I also read a bit about some Amsoil oil too, but they said they don't recommend using other manufactured limited slip additives if needed.

I honestly don't do much towing at all but if/when I do, I never want to worry about having an issue.

I would stick with either Amsoil or redline. I've tried Mobil 1, and royal purple gear oil and always had trouble with chatter. Amsoil served me well and even though I've never used Redline I would have confidence in it from all the reviews here.
