I feel bad for your area lol! We only have a handful of claims in our distrcit combined yearly. I have never seen a "serious" claim, most are something simple. Though when I did it full-time we used to have a damage claim of the week for our e-mails, those were always pretty funny... and embarrased the hell out of the store and installer. I would venture to say there are more claims at BBY because it is a big box, we have people try to claim stuff on us sometimes that is nothing we even touched. A few months ago we did a deck in older mustang (like 98-02 style) and the guy tried to submit a claim saying we cut out his carpet up against the firewall. Needless to say that got denied. It is also about how well you know your cars and your area. We make people sign waivers for a lot of cars we know the dash is high risk of breaking (older chevys especially cavaliers, most 2000s nissans, ect.
One of the more popular and established shops locally here (28 years I believe) posts monthly for backyard installers. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but most of these people are not qualified to work on brand new cars.
Not sure when you worked, but they have changed the policy to where you have to have 3 months training and be MECP Basic and minimum before you step foot in a car. We lost a few lead installers because of the certification.
