I recently bought a 170k miles 03-5.7. Was told it"ran when parked" Lol. It's tight, it will turn, but barely. Plans are to put it in an 05-2500 I bought, which has a 5.7 , complete with a hole in the block. I have read threads that indicate, due to EGR, that I need the later heads. Yhat much I know. In the event that the crank needs turned, will a longer stroke crank( from a 6.1/6.4) work in my block? I'm planning on new rod and main bearings,as well as timing chain and oil pump, even with the stock crank. With that mileage, of course the cam is suspect. Another thread suggested possibly a 6.1 cam would work, and that the factory one was way cheaper than aftermarket.I've got a experienced mechanic friend who can port match the heads and intake, as well as some bowl blending. Plans are for fresh, better valve springs. Due to the cost,I'm trying not to have to bore this block. Any advice or input from anyone who has done something similar would be appreciated

A 6.1 crank is the exact same size/dimensions as the 5.7 cranks, they both have a 3.58” stroke. The 6.1 crank is forged and has a stronger 4 bolt reluctor wheel, compared to a 3 bolt cast crank that the 5.7 has. 5.7 blocks really don’t get bored out much more then .020-.040, so don’t expect to get any major displacement from that. I know Stu at Inertia Motorsports has a stroker kit that uses a 6.4 crank machined to fit the 5.7 block which gets it up to around 360 cubes. I think his complete kit ran around $2200. There are some forged 392 stroker kits from eagle and SCAT around $2400, but they typically need a machine shop to check the balance. I’m using Manley’s forged 392 kit that ran around $2900. Then you need to pick up a bigger set of injectors, get a tuner and custom tuning, and spring and pushrod upgrades if you running a bigger then stock cam. It all adds up very quickly...

And if you want to just eliminate the egr, you won’t have to worry about getting the exact heads

If memory serves, 3rd gen 2500's don't have EGR. 6.1 crank will get you towards a stronger bottom end but not a displacement increase. Since you wanna throw it in an 05 you would be able to tune it properly, chrisp gave you some good options.
