I am getting a little nervous about my installer. He is stating that I will need a new carrier for the front axle with the 4.56's? From what I have read on here that isn't correct. This place has done a lot of gear swaps & have been in business for over 50 years but I am still getting worried.

My guy said the 5.13s require a new carrier, and I dang sure didnt pay for a new one with y 4.88s. What brand of gears? Maybe it varies according to brand. Either that, or he thinks you have a half ton or something. My guys put Yukons in mine IIRC.

Are your Yukons quiet? That is what I will be getting as well.

Yeah I think I will tell him today that I am not paying for a new carrier. I wouldn't think it would have anything to do with certain brands but I guess it is possible. If I can't gets some better answers I will get my deposit back & go somewhere else.

Whew! Just talked to the head mechanic at this shop & he agreed that 4.56 should be able to fit in the front carrier. He has been using the same vendor (Randy's Ring & Pinion) for years & stated they will more than likely will be using Yukon Gears. I feel way more at ease after talking to the mechanic instead of the manager at the register!

Awesome. That's exactly what I needed to hear.

I just hope I notice the difference in performance that I'm hoping. I need low end grunt yo get my 5th wheel moving. Even with 4.10s I'm ok at speed.

Since you basically have the same truck as mine, please keep me informed on whether they are telling you a different carrier is needed. I am hearing so much back & forth on this. The guy ordering the parts still insists I need different carrier, the head mechanic there doesn't think so. Read a member on here with a 2018 had to get a different carrier with the 4.56. Emailed East Coast Gear Supply to give me a list of parts needed to do the swap & he stated there is a spacer or conversion bearing that can be used so you can use the same carrier & no modifications to the carrier. I have found a couple more local shops that do gears so I am also going to get input form them too. This shouldn't be this hard!

There is a You Tube video on Gear swap. Beast Projects I believe. He changed to 4.56 and Carrier was not needed.

Thanks... I will look that up. I just talked to another shop about the swap out, & by just a quick glance, he thought I would need a different carrier as well! If this is the case I don't think I will want to spend that much extra money. Very frustrating!

I haven't been told by any of the shops I have talked to that a carrier is needed. If it is, then it must be included in the price they quoted me. But if I do the swap before you I will definitely let you know.

hate to be blunt with you. But if you are not seeing the writing on the wall with your installer.... You must be blind.

This is what they do for a living correct?
If they don’t know what parts it takes how in the hell do they know how to install them?

Yeah... but now I am having more than one shop tell me this is true. They are both reputable shops. I got an email back today from ecgs.com that said "I have the correct gear for the 14+ aam 9.25" front that allows for easy install without a different carrier". The two shops I have talked to so far, get all of their gears from Randy's Ring & Pinion. I just shot them off an email asking for a parts list & about the carrier. If they come back & say I am fine, I will present that to the shop. There are probably a dozen or more people on here that have had gear swaps done on their 4th gen trucks with no change of carriers. But looking through old posts I did notice one guy with an 2018 that did have to change front carrier. I have gone through so many old posts my head is swimming. I get the feeling from some of the posts they is a work around if you have the wrong carrier. Like there is a bearing conversion that fixes it, some say the crush sleeve has to be trimmed, & some have said a little machining or grinding of the current carrier had to be done. I took an auto mechanics course back in 1986 & I think we were taught just about everything but working on differentials. Wish I had a little more knowledge in this area.

Just dont expect it to jerk stuff around like its not there. I love mine, but I had unrealistic expectations I guess and was a little disappointed at first, but I guess my driving style has changed to suit the truck better. All things considered, theres no way I would go back to a 3.73 in this truck.

Wow... spent all night on here with a search for "carriers" & about half the posts I read say yes they had to change the carrier. One guy claimed there was somebody on the Cummins Forum that has done many gear swaps & states that from 14-18 FCA used several different carriers! What the crap! Oddly enough most of the guys that had to purchase a different carrier only paid between $2,300-2,700 which is what I was quoted without the carrier.

I had a 2006 Duramax and put a Hypertec programmer on it. Initially it didnt feel that different, but once I took it off a couple days before trading it, it was crazy how much more pedal I needed. I figure the gears are a lot like that.

2014 and up with Coil springs have 11.5" Rear. Front 9.25 2014 and up includes 4.56. 14-17 years. Look at C&M Gear. This is for AAM Sets. I would call C&M Gear and speak with them.
