I just want to make sure that this might be the culprit. I’ve noticed on three occasions that I get a burning rubber smell. 2 of those times I saw that Automatic Regeneration was occurring at the same time. Does anyone else notice the same thing? Is this normal? Sorry for the ignorance, but this is the first diesel I’ve had since my ‘94 Silverado.

I don’t have a diesel so others will chime in I am sure, but worked in Ford dealership where their diesels went into regen and a lot of heat is generated and subsequent smells should be considered normal. But I guess it’s always possible that some rubber mount could be too close to the exhaust when it gets real hot.

when my 2019 2500 goes into renen I get soot all over the tailgate and all along the passenger side. even some on the right front fender, with my white paint it really shows it. is this normal?
I have noticed some on the top of the fuse box under the hood as well.

Sounds like road grime to me, not soot. No way soot from the exhaust (which the DPF/regen burns off to nothing anyway) would be getting in the areas you mentioned.

I'll second what @mtnrider stated it's most likely road grime and not from a regen. For the regen to cause that you would probably see the burned soot come out of the tailpipe. Your tailpipe should be practically clean as a whistle.

update one year later:
every time my truck goes into regen i get small bb sized oil spots all over the passenger side of the truck.
from the right front tire opening all the way down the side to the tailgate.
my truck is white so it really stands out. and its oil or soot, not road grime.
my tailpipe is clean as a whistle no buildup of any sort

my first thought is wheel bearings and/or cv joints. Anything in the wheel well, back of the wheel? We had a Subaru years ago that would cook the inner CV joint in heavy traffic.

Is something leaking further upstream in the exhaust thats coating the side of your truck?
