Okay, so the takeaway is the big EVIC is pickier than the little EVIC.As one of my mods I upgraded my gauge cluster from the 3.5 evic to the 7'premium evic, and now the truck displays bulb out messages for both the backup lights and the plate marker lights.
So I guess it depends what cluster you have, at least in my case, I replaced the backup and plate marker lights with regular bulbs and messages went away.
So I bought the lights from retro-solutions like suggested. A couple questions. You generally don't need anything special for the reverse lights, as far as I know.
Honestly, while I love DiodeDynamics, and did all my taillights and front marker lights with their stuff on my '14, even the brightest of their lights probably won't outdo the ones from Retro-Solutions.Net.
Specifically, if you have factory LED tails, these are the ones: 7440 7443 T20 6W CREE LED Reverse Side Emitter Wedge Bulbs - Retro-Solutions Store
If you don't have factory LED tails, it would be these: 921 912 906 T15 5W CREE LED Reverse Wedge Bulbs - Retro-Solutions Store
Why, you may ask?
Because the backup light bulbs are in "sideways", so you need a side-emitter. But that's not all. They're also "kinked" a bit, at two different angles, compared to usual side-emitters. These are custom-made for Rams.
The lights above will probably be brighter than anything else you'll find that isn't custom-made for these trucks. I tried some from SuperBrightLEDs, and even those didn't work as well, because the light wasn't going straight back where it should be. Even the reflector wasn't doing much. I put the same bulbs in my cargo lights, and they were great, but for backup bulbs you need the "kinked" side-emitters.
(HINT: because I learned the hard way. If you get those from Retro-Solutions, if you each one in the wrong taillight, it'll fit, but the light will be pointing inward toward the reflector. If you put it in the wrong one backwards, it will point out but not work. They fit one way, so make sure they're pointing out toward the lens, then test, then reassemble.)
For what it's worth, I can heartily recommend SuperBrightLEDs and DiodeDynamics for pretty much any other light on the truck. Had great experiences with both, and everything I had worked great!
Hope this helps!
Hmmm. I bought the 13-LED ones from SuperBrightLEDs, and they worked fine, but they have LEDs pointing in all directions. Not sure what to do about spots. So I bought the lights from retro-solutions like suggested. A couple questions.
1) I bought the "spot lights" for the cargo light. Looks like the angle of the light is pointed up so I'm landing airplanes instead of lighting my bed. I cannot flip the buble because it will not work and I can not put it in the housing the other way will not fit. Any suggestions.
Out toward the lens. And it IS possible to get them in the wrong sides. They point at two slightly different angles, so make sure they're pointing directly at the lenses and not just "sorta kinda" in that direction.2) I also bought the reverse light which has the bulbs only on the one side. Are the bulbs suppose to be facing in toward the reflector or out toward the lens?
Yeah. I notified them about that too, but they still haven't changed the webpage. The retro-solution fit all gen 4 right? Their page says 2012
