Rust with Mufflex kit

Just figured I'd take a look at see how my truck is aging with rust and such even though its a 2011. Besides the drive shaft and the rear end with rust on it. My mufflex kit is more rusty than I think it should. I have about 50k miles on mine and I don't like its looks. I had a Magnaflow om my Stratus for 9 years and 100k miles and still looked like new with no surface rust.

wow! I have about the same amount of miles on my Mufflex on my truck, but those miles were put on in about a year and a few months, so I think yours is more of a time issue than a miles issue, because mine still looks pretty good. Plus I live in Texas and we don't use salt on our roads like y'all probably do where you live? That could be the biggest culprit to your rust. Mine has gotten a bit louder over those miles though. Has yours?

Mine is more than a bit louder now. Its broken in pretty good. I live in the Northeast so that doesn't help much. Like I said I had a magnaflow on my Stratus for 9 yrs/100k miles and looked like new. I looked up the mufflers part number and it is a stainless steel MagnaFlow Exhaust Products - For Trucks, Suv's, American Muscle, Diesel, & Sport Compact Vehicles

Maybe a lower grade stainless than the ones that are sold just as Magnaflows. I do know that all the Flowmasters I have run in the past rusted out pretty good and quickly. So even down here they will rust. Yeah mine is quite a bit louder too. It has developed more drone that I had to do a little sound deadening project to get rid of.

I miss the idle sounds. You get on it and it sounds good but idle its still too quiet for me.

I'd say that's pretty normal. Remember, stainless is rust resistant, not rust proof, so the %'s increase depending on the roads (salt, oils, etc). Unless coated prior to install, most end up with surface rust within a couple years.

right now it looks like a good coat of surface rust. the muffler is solid when you bang on it.

Something doesn't make sense. All the stainless fittings that are on my boat living in salt water still look new after 25 years. They must use a crappy grade of stainless on those mufflers.

Not all stainless is corrosion resistant. Magnaflow makes the muffler from 409 grade stainless, Mufflex makes their pipes from the same. 409 doesn't have enough nickel content to make it corrosion resistant, it will form a layer of oxidation any it will slowly corrode. Boesch Built uses 303 stainless which is a true corrosion resistant steel. Generally to know if you have 409 or 303 use a magnet. Magnet will stick to 409 but not 303 because of the higher ferrous metal content in the 409 (aka iron)

that is why i painted my muffler before i installed it. keep it looking pretty longer

i know the paint that i used on my muffler sticks pretty good and should last. i painted my exhaust manifolds with it and it lasted a lot better than i thought it would have even though it changed colors.

Stainless can be contaminated by Carbon steel as well. No matter the grade if you rub carbon steel against stainless steel it will cause the stainless to start rusting.
And the materials used today, are not as good as they use to be.

Have a LOWLEY 5000km on my truck with the mufflex. Rusty as well already and I never drive the thing...but I get it hot enough to burn out moisture. So its strictly a material thing.

Good thing the 14" mufflex is cheap!

Not to beat a dead horse, but for informational purposes: regardless of grade, stainless will eventually surface rust/corrode. We use 304 at work, in a freshwater/saltwater environment, and even with 304 coming in contact with primarily rodi water, there is considerable surface rust within 2yrs. 316 will eventually corrode depending on conditions, though less likely so (have used). Here's a 304 after 2yrs of use with primarily freshwater contact (not soaked underwater). You are more likely to come in contact with various oils, residues, etc while driving and though unsightly, it's not likely you're going to see a complete degrade/dissolve; although, it utterly annoys the crap out of me which is why I'll blackout my entire exhaust when I redo it.
