Was going to sand down to metal and buy get some primer and paint, 2 tone so the silver grey I had a hard time finding the match but all together I’d be looking at about 150 for paint supply’s and with primer. Considering it’s a 2010 my other thing was I was just going to use a grey/silver rock guard after sanding. since my paint if I go that route likely won’t match anyways due to fade.
Could I just go that route and sand it and use rockerguard? It Would be a way cheaper option

I'd get ALL the rust out then prime with a 2 part epoxy primer regardless of whether you paint it or rockguard it. SPI makes killer epoxy primer. I did a little rust repair on my neighbors Dakota and brushed the epoxy onn2 years ago and hid it with a chrome fender trim piece and it's still holding fast.

Looks like you have metal flaking off. Rust will just keep coming back. If you are keeping the truck for a while the best thing to do is have a body shop cut panel and replace. Don't let them just weld over, they need to remove back to no rust, weld flush metal to flush metal, then sand down weld seem, should only need thin coat of body filler. You also need to rust proof behind the repair as it will have bare metal.

Another option is to sandblast and grind, prime and paint, then get plastic sill guards and install over. You will see rust again within a year, just how it is. Sorry to not have better news, good luck with whatever you do.

More than likely you're looking at panel replacement once you get into it unfortunately.

They normally rust from the back side so by the time you sand all the rust off you will have big holes.

Definitely going to need panel replacement and you will need to clean up the inside rust while the panel is off. Do not use fluid film if you plan on repairing it, the wax in the product will contaminate the metal and prevent any kind of repair from being successful.
