One persons drone may be another’s symphony. There is no doubt that these intakes outflow the stock setup by the claimed +40%, you just need to determine what side effects you can or can't live with with regards to maintenance, install, and vacuum noise.

This is a shame to hear about.

When I put the older style S&B on my 2012 it hands-down outclassed everything else except the Vararam air grabber and even there it had an advantage in snow season. Build quality was great too.

From a quick visual it appears S&B screwed up by doing away with the soft coupler/clamp set up at the filter box-intake interface. New version obviously lacks the ease of access. Losing the lower air intake is a shame, but does take away concern when crossing high-water.

I don't see why the OP would be getting drone unless its through the removable back panel--that defeats the cold-air function anyway and makes it no better than a K&N or Afe hot air noise maker. Open top Not-so-cold air intakes have always been poser/whiny loud.

I wonder if Volant still makes a decent alternative?

I looked at Volants CAI with a powercore filter and the lower scoop. Looks like a great CAI it's just pretty expensive with the scoop...

Did you have the S&B lower scoop on your 2012?

I have had mine on for a few years. Its just slightly louder then stock. I only get drone from my muffler I dont notice my intake at all. Shoot S&B is basically a stock intake anyways. Pretty similar besides the type of filter!

The only time I hear mine is when I get on the gas. If you want to keep the engine cover buy a 90° hose adapter. As for the gasket where the tube enters the box, add a thin coat of grease of vaseline before you install. You wont ever see it and it allows the tube to slip in and out without catching and pulling out the gasket. Zip ties are not necessary at all you are pulling vacuum not creating boost pressure so they wont blow off once you get the seated on there. The first time is a little tough but as long as you put on your big boy pants you can get it to slide on tight. I have not had a single issue with mine other then my OCD with having finger prints on the clear cover so I took it off cleaned it and reinstalled it while wearing medical gloves. It gets throaty on the throttle cant hear much else. With the plug out it will be a little louder and I dont see it as necessary to keep open anyways

Yeah I tried silicone grease on that silicone seal. Lasted about a month before it dried up. Even with the grease the thing still popped out of the air box whenever the air tube was removed.

What kind of grease did you use? I used dielectric silicone grease because I was worried about petroleum greases eating the silicone. Silicone grease probably didn't hold up to the under hood temps...

I used clear synthetic brake lube called break life (lasts forever and the tubes were so overstocked at the shop I use to work at I still have a ton)

i had the same issue. My work around is cap off the outlet on the intake tube and just install a small breather filter. works great for me.

I'm really shocked to hear that you had so much issues with it, I installed mine as soon as I got my truck last year and it was super easy to install I had no issues whatsoever, and yeah it is a little throaty but I don't hear any drone at all in my cab just sounds super cool and absolutely love the S&B product.

Also mine is the 5106.

Same challenging hose issue, in fact my engine cover is only half clipped on right now. I will say it sounds good to me when I punch it!
