Hey guys I just wanted to give you my experience with installing this intake and see what you guys think.

So I bought the 75-5106D off of amazon for like $270. Not a bad deal. Well everything was installing fine until I got to the vacuum hose on the intake tube. OMG....... I raged pretty bad with this thing.

The hose is pretty thick in itself and not really bendable at all. They want you to install this thing and bending it at a 90 and bend the last inch another 90 to put it on the intake tube. When I would install the engine cover first thing was the part where the hose installs to wasn't even lined up with the engine cover. so I cut the hole bigger to get it to line up. Second it would force the tube down so hard that I couldn't bend the last couple inches to fit onto the intake tube. It would just pop off and I couldn't for the life of me get the hose on on all the way. I had the climb inside of my engine bay and use the supplied lube to try and get the hose on. With barely any luck.

So after a while of cursing I took the engine cover off and barely barely got the hose onto the intake tube. I zipped tied what I got on down and Im going to keep an eye on it.

But my couple questions to you guys are what would you guys do about this? Is there a work around with the tube like ordering another one? I want to keep the engine cover on and In the mean time do you guys think the tube should be fine the way I got it zipped tied?

If u need to bend it try a heat gun get the hose loose and bend it. If you hear it up it may go into the fitting with lube a lot easier

Everyone,
Also I have now noticed since installing this my truck now has super annoying drone and throaty engine sounds. Like amazingly loud, and I hate it to be honest. I like throaty but mellow. This is obnoxiously droney in the cab. Did I install this thing wrong or do other people have this?

I had this S&B intake for about 2 months before I sold it. It was nothing but a headache for me for many reasons.

That crankcase vent line is a huge pain in the ass to get to sit right. The engine cover never fit right and I would constantly find it popped up on the driver's side. I ended having to get a copper pipe coupling and some hose clamps attaching the hose to the factory 90° rubber hose. That kind of worked.

Then there was the huge fun time of taking the air tube off to do anything to the engine. It required taking the clear lid off, filter off, and then sliding it out of the air box which 99.999% of the time would dislodge the silicone gasket on the airbox that sealed around the air tube.

IDK I really didn't like that intake at all and I saw 0 improvement in performance or intake temps. IMO their older units the 75-5064/75-5078 were much better intakes because they had the inlet duct that went down to the fender to get cold air as well as the stock fender opening and they were more modular. You could take the air tube off by itself and you used the factory crankcase vent hose because it had a nipple for it on the air box itself.

Again, JMO lots of people are happy with the 75-5106. I just wasn't.

What you said is exactly the same problems I had with this.....Might just have to switch back to stock and get a high flow filter.

Has anyone noticed an intake that has the same noise level as stock but has a tiny throatier sound?

Yeah its definitely more noisy than the stock intake or even the Vararam Air Grabber. Some guys like that, I thought it sounded awful. Another reason I wasn't too fond of it...

Surprisingly the Air Grabber is very quiet. No drone or anything, just a "whoosh" noise at WOT...

To be 100% honest I did email them as soon as I posted this. But I didn't even drive the truck yet when I posted this (too frustrated and hot outside lol), After seeing @Hemi395 go through literally the exact same thing as me and hearing the obnoxious drone I just switched everything back to stock real quick. Imma return it and get a drop in K&N or something. Might do the ecodiesel air box swap thing. Im not looking for that obnoxious drone. Im a family now and not looking to build a track monster.

Plus I asked Jay Greene what his thought was and he stated that a drop in filter actually works really well and the stock filter won't require any retuning anyways. So might aswell just return this get my money back and get a drop in and save some mula lol

Thank you both @j517 and @Hemi395 for your quick responses!!!

No problem!

For the drop in filter, I would either go with K&N or Green. Green is a bit cheaper as they are less well known...

Interesting, I have the original version and only “issue” was manipulating the A/C lines which was just a one and done deal.

Sounds like the revision is anything but a better design. OP, do you have the large plug covered or open? If you don’t have any substantial mods keep it plugged and pull from the cold fender opening to keep noise and IAT temps down.

So during my drive in the first rev up to 3k I instantly noticed the drone. I though maybe it was becuase of the plug and I pulled over at a gas station and took it out while a bum asked me for gas money while his car was running lol another quick drive on the highway and did a couple pulls and the drone wasn't any better at all sadly. I kinda am bummed in the new model. All the review videos and install videos show the old models, but hey you live an learn and share the knowledge.

Was it an oiled or dry filter version? The physics would suggest a dry filter to be more audible.

I ordered the oiled version but I ended up receiving the dry version. Since there was very little difference in the two I decided to go ahead and keep it and buy the oiled filter down the road, but from what I experienced even with the oiled filter, and just like what @Hemi395 stated the new model is just wayyy too much of a hassle. Everything he stated is true and it was a straight pain.

I really don't know what they were thinking with the 5106. They had a great product with the 5064/5078 and it had an optional lower intake scoop you could get separately which actually got cold air from the bumper area. My guess is it was more cost effective to make the 5106.

And the thing is if you look at their other intakes for other trucks, they're much better designed. They actually do a better job than the factory airbox at getting more cold air. The 5106 with the silicone plug removed (which is a PITA to put back in BTW) is a warm air intake.

It really is a shame because S&B is a good company with great customer support. They just completely dropped the ball with the 5106 IMO

I had a ***** of a time installing my new S&B CAI for the same reason, that vent tube. It took multiple attempts to get it installed on the intake tube and then re-install the engine cover.

I have driven it less than 50 miles since the install and can’t say I have noticed a drone. I will pay attention when I get back home to see if I hear it.
