SABIC Inflator Y55 Recall

Bought my 2016 Ram back in September of 2021. When I bought it the dealer told me it had an active recall on the SABIC inflator (side curtain air bag inflator curtain). I checked with a couple of my local dealers and both told me parts were not available. When I downloaded the Ram toolbox app it also said parts were not available. Last week was talking to a dealer about my mirrors and they mentioned the recall. I noticed my Ram toolbox app now showing parts are available. However 3 of my nearest dealers do not have the parts and cannot even order the parts.

Anyone else have this recall? If so have you been able to get the recall addressed?

@RamCares I've emailed and called and asked how we are supposed to resolve this recall if the dealers can't get the parts and received zero response (which has been typical with my experience with Ram Cares).

Yes l, have had it in my profile since August. There is no ETA on parts. I work at a dealership and have been working with our service department about it. @RamCares has always helped, it can take some time for response as they deal with hundreds of cases daily. Even they have no control over getting these parts. This falls soley on the manufacturer of the airbag system.

Yes I have it But my Ram is up for the winter. So NOT in a hurry to get it there. This will be my last truck and if I can help it it will never see "crap" winter weather. My question is what is it that is actually done? Do they pull the covers off the seat to inspect, look at the "bags" serial no.s to see if they are the ones that require replacement, etc. I personnaly do not care to had the seats pulled apart. Famous last words are: I have never had a vehicle deploy air bags yet. Depending on who does the work is what is actually done I worked a a GM dealer and some of the "short cuts" that were done by some were amazing. And of course like anything else how neat/concerned they are about doing the job. Most care BUT if you get the one that does not! I can not seem to find the actual procedure. I assume it is located somewhere in the seat backs? Tried even trying to find on line how to repklace it,etc.

OK, I've been getting email reminders about this recall for a few years on my 2015. At first my local dealer (I did not buy it there) they did not have and could not get the parts.

About 6 months ago, after yet another reminder I called the local dealer and yes the parts were available. I tell them to call me when they come in and I'll schedule the repair.

I forgot about it and apparently they did too. Never got a call. (That should have been a warning)

Recently got another reminder about this so I called them up and they checked and said "yes, your part is in would you like to make an appointment?" They said to drop it off at 8:00AM on Friday. It was easier for me to get a ride home on Thursday afternoon so I dropped it off early.

I looked it up and the repair, both sides, takes an estimated 3 hours. Apparently involves the headliner. On Friday I checked in with them around 10:00AM to ask when it would be done. My "service advisor" assured me it would be done by 5:00PM. I'm thinking WTF was with the 8:00AM drop off request?

I think you know where this is going...Well I checked in with them a few more times today and each time I was assured, 5:00PM. Untill the last time. "Oh, the tech ran into "some problems" (so since it's Friday "this is in going into Monday").

Obviously, this screwed up my weekend. I don't know what to think. If it involves the head liner I'm sure it is someting most techs would not want to try to beat flat rate time on. Especially if it is not something they had done a few times before or if they were given only the estimated 3 hours to do it. I imagine the finger pointing is going all over the place over there.

Saga, to be continued...

Does anybody know the incident rate of the Y55 failure? ie how many times has this fail happened? My dealer says that the parts are not available at any rate

I don’t the frequency of the occurrence but it’s happened enough for them to initiate the recall. Doesn’t mean you’ll ever have any issues with it but it could make it a little harder to trade the vehicle in to a dealer if the parts not being available is a known problem. I had to get in a waiting list and be persistent in calling my dealer before I was able to get parts available. Then I had to be flexible in getting my truck in and dropped off for the day so they could get the work completed. It was kind of a pain.
