I bought my brand new 2018 Ram 2500 CC with the off road package back in December and I've noticed that when I try to reverse out of the driveway, the tranny acts like it's searching for reverse. My driveway is a decent incline so I'm backing up hill. The truck does not roll forward and it has two inches or so of dead pedal. If I don't try and accelerate, it will take about 5 seconds to find reverse and start backing up under idle. When I try and accelerate in reverse it's, again, two inches of dead pedal and then a quick acceleration rearward

Is this normal? It's my first Dodge and first 3/4 ton. My 2018 1500 work truck does not do this. Do I need to have it looked at? The truck has no issues when on flat ground or going forward up hill

That does not sound normal to me !
Being new I would have the dealer look at it !
But I am not a gear head and only have a 1500.
PLEASE UPDATE when you find out what up ! Thanks

Yeah...it's a bit odd to me but then again, it's a new truck, and a new house so I can't remember the last time I had to reverse up a hill. I've driven chargers before and I know they always roll for a few feet when switching from reverse to drive. This is very similar. There is no noise, no grinding, no pop when it finds reverse. Just a dead pause for a few seconds .

Sounds possibly like your hill assist kicking in. Turn it off and see if it stops. Then ya know it’s not that. That’s where I’d start. I’m on an incline on my driveway. I hate it. Sometimes it’s hard to get into gear cause it binds up. I actually let my hill assist kick in before I put truck in park and that makes a big didfence when I go into reverse.

I'll give it a shot. Thanks

So the Hill Start Assist was the issue. Turned it off and dropped right into gear and will start to back up hill under idle.

Thank you for the suggestion. I was starting to wonder if my brand new truck had a bad trans.

Thanks again.

My 2018 6.4 does the same thing but not 5 seconds; it takes maybe 2. Takes a second for all those big gears to engage.

My new ford transit work van does this forward or reverse on an incline. It’s hill assist but I leave it on due to being loaded up with a couple 1000lbs of stuff in it.

It was definitely the hill start assist. Mine must have been on from the factory because it took me forever to figure out how to turn it off. I have the base model stereo and had no idea I had all the options in the cluster/steering wheel

I dont know why you would want hill assist off. Especially if you put the truck in and out of gear on a hill regularly... thats where it works, and works very well.

Yes! Hill assist is amazing. I could see if op has never had it before it would seem weird. Once you figure out exactly how it works it’s great! That and tip start are two amazing features I think are overlooked

Yes! Allows you to simply turn key quickly and not hold it till she starts. I forget how nice it is till I get into a truck or car without haha. Remember we used to have to turn key to start and hold till she started. Now you just turn to start and let go.
