Service DEF System See Dealer

Hey Guys,
I just purchased a 2017 Ram 2500 Laramie with 6300 miles today. I was driving around in the mountains and sitting idle while I was trying to register the Uconnect system when I got a message that said Service Def System See Dealer. This is my first diesel. I know what the Def system is and what it does, but do I really have to take it to the dealer to fix it at 6300 miles? The Def system gauge shows it's almost 100% full and it did not give me any kind of message about going into limp mode. Can this message reset itself if it corrects itself or is it one of those things that is going to have to be reset regardless?

Mine did that twice within the first 5K miles plus it threw 2 regen failure codes in which it went into limp mode both times, leaving me 14 miles North of Nowhere.

Each time I had a dealer delete the codes but the CELs and failures continued. I'm not saying you will have the same problems, though.

You could try a reset by pulling your negative battery cable for at least 30 minutes to clear the code but if it comes back, go see the dealer for a fix. You have a warranty even though you are the second owner.

After dealing with the third limp mode and subsequent long walk, I fixed the problem myself by getting rid of the DEF system, regen canister, muffler, sensors and harnesses. Once the DEF delete was done I got rid of the EGR valve & cooler and the throttle valve.

I installed an EGR blockoff plate, 4" FloPro delete pipes, a Corsa dB series 4" muffler, an Edge CTS-2 Insight programmer with Cummins unlock and A-pillar pod, EFI Live CSP4 & transmission tune, a CSP4 tune switch and an Edge Expandable EGT probe kit.

I've not had a check engine light since related to the DEF system, random misfires or any other such nonsense. It wasn't cheap but the truck runs a WHOLE lot better and I'm getting better mileage to boot.

There are several reasons that cause a DEF concern. Knowing the code or codes that are set would be helpful.

The next morning the message was gone. I took it to the dealer anyways and they stuck their code reader on it. They said it didn't have any codes in the system and was possibly a glitch. It hasn't come back on since.

I like the idea but only possible in states that don't require inspection. I know, move to one of those states.

I understand. I just moved to a state that has inspections (Colorado). First time in my life ever having to deal with this crap.

Did you ever get this resolved? I have a 2016 and recently began getting def messages and Check Engine Light (P207F). It happens at around 5500' Altitude (driving up from sea level). Dealer has reloaded PCM and ECM Software but that has not fixed it.

I have the same ongoing issue with my 2017 Ram, it only happens above 5500' so far every time the dealer flashes it the problem goes away until I go back up in elevation.....the dealer currently has the truck and replacing the DEF pump I can sometimes prevent the DEF message or limp mode from happening by stopping a number of times on the way up the mountain and shutting off for a time or cool down...the dealer really doesn't have an answer but they are giving me a new DEF pump. We'll see
