So rented a small trailer to do some landscape work this weekend. I'm driving turning a corner and hear a fairly loud click click click click in the steering area. It only did it on that corner and is no longer doing it. Loud enough it definitely caught my attention and I was like what the hell was that? All of a sudden my dash lights go wild for a sec and I thought I was going into limp mode. The light next to the traction control light (it looks the same as TC light) pops on and an error message to "service the trailer brake" message comes on. I keep driving for a bit as everything seems fine minus the message and assume its an issue with the rental trailer.

I notice that cruise no longer works. So I pull over and check the wiring to the trailer (seems fine), unplug it and turn the truck off. Fire back up and the message is still there. Check the lights on the trailer, everything still works fine. So I continue doing my landscape work and figure I'll worry about it later. Driving another load of mulch and all of a sudden "service abs system" pop on, I feel my brakes catching a bit as if the abs is kicking on and off. Then about 5 seconds later it goes away and is normal. Continue driving another 20 miles and it never comes back on.

Get home do some reading on here and on the FB group and most common I see is either 1. wiring to trailer needs fixed. 2. The clock spring broke 3. The abs module needs replaced.

I'm really hoping for option 1 or 2 as it appears the abs module is pretty spendy. Due to the loud clicking upon turning that started the entire thing, I'm definitely leaning toward the clock spring. New clock spring is $200. But I don't want to just start replacing crap and then that not be it.

Thoughts? Might disconnect the trailer and the battery for a bit and see what happens.

could be that the trailer wiring at the trailer plug does not match the trucks wiring

Ya I do need to just drive it no trailer for a bit and see if it goes away. But the loud clicking in the steering or dash area was definitely odd timing if it was a wiring problem.

So something definitely broke. Pulling a

C0051-62 Steering wheel position sensor signal failure
B16BF-15 Front left sidemark lamp control short to battery
B16B7-15 Center stop lamp control Short
U0100 Lost comm with ECM/PCM
U0415-00 Implausible data received from ABS
C2128-00 ECU reset occured

Ideas? keep in mind heard something audibly break or clicking when turning in steering area.
Pulled battery neg. Took off my tuner. Nothing still same codes.

My battery is 5 years 2 months old from purchase. So probably really pushing 6 years old. Could start there as I know with these highly electronic vehicles they can cause a lot of issues. Still wouldn't explain the loud clicking noise while turning prior to this happening though.

I would start with load testing , or because of its age a new battery.

I'll grab a new AGM battery because I'm going to need one regardless anyways. I definitely still think the clock spring needs replaced. The first code that popped the steering sensor is located on the Clock spring. I heard the audible clicking while turning, and I've heard of others having this issue from the clock spring.

Read some more but unfortunately it seems to be all over the place with this issue. Ranging from people fixed it with:

alignment (to fix the wheel alignment being out)
speed sensors
clock spring
new abs unit
fuses becoming dislodged ( already push them all in)
Others had it quit on its own then do it again later or just quit and go away.

Thanks. I checked those out as well. The lamp errors are due to my Alpharex gen 2 pros so nothing to do with the "service brake system" issue. Forgot to mention that in my first post. I cleared codes and drove for awhile and the two that I'm still getting are the C0051 (clockspring/steering angle sensor) and the U0415 (abs). I'm hoping the ABS just isn't getting feedback from the broken clock spring and thus throwing the U0415. As the ABS fix appears to be around $2k at a dealer. I'm out of full warranty by 2 months of course.

I've had the clock spring out before while adding steering wheel controls. Not that hard. So I'd probably just replace that myself, but also don't want to just randomly start throwing parts at it for no reason and hoping something sticks. Such as changing the clock spring for no reason.

Had the battery checked today and they said it is perfectly fine. Are they still known to start throwing error codes while still testing fine as they get older? Or if the battery were to be causing the issue would it likely be showing weakness?

How many miles on your truck?

This is just a thought, and only because I just dealt with it this past weekend. I had a clicking noise coming from the front. My wheel hub/bearing assembly went out. The ABS connection is on that assembly. I replaced both of my front hub assemblies and the noise went away. If the hub is bad enough, it will throw some ABS codes, and trailer wiring codes.

It wasn't a hard job to do. Took me and friend about 1.5-2 hrs to replace both the fronts. Apparently they are only good for about 100k miles. I had 124k on mine.

I only have 49k, but have been on Bils 2.8 on stock UCA's (I don't know why I didn't upgrade when I installed them 5 years ago) and running 35's pretty much the entire time. So I could see something in the area going out, but my tire shop always says everything looks great.

Noises are hard to determine as well. It sounded like the clockspring area to me but could have been from under the truck too or somewhere else.

I have a diagnostic appt today at 4 at a shop that specializes in alignment, braking, etc and does a lot of leveled or lifted trucks. I think my alignment is off anyways ever since I got the 35's I don't feel like the tire shop did a good job as it pulls hard to the right on braking or acceleration. So I found this alignment specialty shop rather than going to the dealer who annoyed me too many times while I was under warranty.

Ended up being the clock spring. A pin on it bent nearly in half on a turn which then made the tape spin and screwed it up. Fixed now.
