What was the actual code? Any service records available when you bought the truck? Trans been serviced at all?

I would start by checking trans fluid and making sure its full. Could be low on fluid or could have internal issues, like the valve body. I would look into it or have it looked at asap to keep it from getting any worse.

First thing I would do is a trans service. If no change I would suspect the valleys wit attached sensor pack.

You need to decide at those miles on a 2500 do I go new rfe or do I do a valve body and solenoid. I say chose because nobody is going to warranty any old parts, so if you need a new rfe those parts are useless unless you can swap trans. The second you install new VB a shop considers it old part. RFE is famous for overdrive issues first, usually valve body issue. Hemi395 found this gem... You can drop pan to do fluid service, I'll post some links later, and the drop valve body torx 25, and play with pistons, see video, help you decide. Don't pull VB apart before you understand check balls, messing with pistons ok.

If you have decent dyi level you can get a rebuild kit plus solenoid, this will be cheapest way to try and lessen impact if you do indeed need rfe. You probably will want a gasket to help any leak issues or minor warpage, look up rfe shift kit gaskets.

You might need bi directional coder to quicklearn it, not sure about process on 2017 a PCM lock.
