Signal Processing Suggestions?

I need some help/suggestions on correcting the signal from a base system 8.4N Headunit.

Would you mind sharing your experiences with any signal processing box?

Some of the units I have been looking into are the JL Cleansweep, JBL MS-8 and Audio Control DQ-61/LCQ-1

I realize that these all have different features and functions. Just looking for thoughts/experiences.

If it helps my system consists of:
JL XD400/4
JL JX500/1d
MB Quart QM 215.61 5.25 components (Front)
Memphis 6x9 (rear)
JL 10W6v2.

I have an MS-8 and have written quite a bit about it on my thread in this forum if you care to read.


I have no experience with the other 2 but from what ive gathered, MS-8 is on a whole different level in terms of processing. First off it has time alignment and I don't think the others do. To me, this is one of the most critical needs in order to have a great sounding system. The ms-8 does all the fine tuning (for each individual channel) for you and does a damn fine job. All you have to do is install in correctly and sit in ur seat with a set of headphones on and let the ms-8 do its work.

The JL clean sweep is just a summoning tool unless you get the eq that is sold seperately but then you are looking at the price of more than the MS8 with not even close to the functions.

I have to agree with both of these fellas. I own a RF 3sixty.3 and its a ***** to tune if you have no experience. And the ms8 does that for you. But no matter what I am a Rockford Fosgate fan and I still like the 360.3

You Sir are the reason I want to try 3way tuning with a less expensive DSP before I plink down some real cash on the 360.3 for my wifes car.

I feel honored...lol...but after reading and reading threads on DIYMA its not as bad/hard as it seems. its just time consuming. Its also easier with a rta. since I dont have one, after I finish my cheesy install I will take it to someone that knows their stuff and fine tune it. Now that I have more free time I can try to focus more on finishing my build.

Yeah I've been reading a bunch and feel I could confidently get better than what my 80prs does. I know I can play around with the 80 but I want to try full fledge tuning with a PC and Mic using the REW program.

For me I have never ever tuned a car with a pc and dsp. This has been a learning experience and the more I mess with it the better it sounds. But I still have a long way to go.

Still looking for additional experiences, including those with the clean sweep and audio controls stuff.



The signal from the stick head unit sucks and in trying to figure out the best, most economical way to fix it.

I was thinking the MS-8 was the way to go, but I'm now considering the Audison Bit One.

Local shop strongly prefers the Bit One, but they have been unable to articulate why, may simply be profit margin.

The Bit One does look nice though.

The bit one is a very nice unit. If i was confident in my tuning capabilities it would be on the top of my list. Still is, for sometime down the road.


Do you plan on doing all the tuning yourself or having a store do it? If youre a tweaker and capable of fine tuning a system id definately go with the bit one.

I'm a tweaker all right, not really sure on the "capable" part.

I've adjusted gains, manually done time alignment, etc, and I'm good with computers (I have built and configured my own from scratch), but never fooled with one of these DSPs.

You sound like me man I would go with something you can tinker with for sure. I went cheap route with the PPI DSP 88R try the tuning on my own before I drop big money on a more established unit down the road.

What do you folks think of the Alpine H800?

Seems to be the only one out there that has an auto tune other than the MS-8, and it lets you manually tweak the settings after the auto config is completed unlike the MS-8.

Havent heard much on the alpine, but i was under the impression there hardly any tweeking afterwards. What you get is what you get?

Alpine Tech Support just told me that the H800 will not work with the HU that is used in the Premium Alpine 8.4AN system.

They then said no DSP would work with this HU as it shuts itself down if the factory amp is disconnected.

They said its possible if you leave the factory amp connected.

Didn't bother to continue the conversation at that point, I was just calling to see if I would need the separate dash controller, but didn't believe a word I was hearing so felt asking my original question was pointless.

Brad: You did remove the factory amp in your build, correct?

My truck came with the poverty system. I dont have a factory amp, i dont think. Besides, i have an after market head unit running signal straight to the MS-8

If one could get a deal on a 360.3 or the bit one.... I would do that. The ms8 is nice but I like the simplicity of the 360.3/bit one , can't go wrong with either one of those 3
