I have a 2023 RAM 1500, time to get a code reader. I'm thinking of a bluetooth OBDLink LX OBD2 because it will enable me to grow into sophisticated apps, but for now I just want to be able to read all dodge ram codes and possibly simply clear them. I can grow into something with the capability of Alfaobd but for now see no need for its programing features and wouldn't mess with them while vehicle still under warranty.

Anyone have opinions on that device and also recommendations for simple code-reading/resetting android software?

Also, will I need a bypass cable, and what exactly is that?

As a side note, will also be using the device if wifes 2025 rav4 throws a code.

1. Most any cheapo OBDII dongle can access OBD std pids for CEL and clear them with a proper app. I use the OBDLink MX+

2, The Torque app seems to about the best liked one out there for that on the cheap. The OBDLink dongle comes with an app for that. I use the AlfaOBD on a windows laptop

3. Your truck, being newer than a 2017, needs the security bypass for making changes in the programming, but I am not sure if it's need to clear CEL's or not (I have a '16 so I don't need it and not sure about the 18's and up). Perhaps someone else can answer that for you..

Jump up to the OBXLink MX+ as it can read both the CANbus (C & IHS) that Ram uses without any adapters.
The OBDLink MX+ also has an app to read error codes and it comes with expanded OEM specific data for easier troubleshooting.

Yes, every Ram truck 2018+ requires a security gateway bypass harness.

Stellantis decided to secure our trucks from corruption through the wireless or OBD2 port, for our protection.

A popular choice is from KaodTech, designed and built in America by Ram Forum members.

Are you sure the LX doesn't cover the Ram's canbus? Here's what it says on OBDLink website: "MX+ supports all legislated OBD-II protocols, plus advanced Ford & GM vehicle networks (MS-CAN and SW-CAN). MX+ works with all 1996 & newer cars and light trucks sold in the United States, and also supports EOBD, JOBD, and all other international variants of OBD-II. If you don’t require access to advanced Ford & GM networks, consider purchasing OBDLink LX (not iOS compatible)."

Does the 2023 Ram use one of those ms-can or sw-can networks?

The reason everyone likes the MX+ is that it is 100% rock stable with AlfaOBD and the one they suggested from the get go.

Plus it does the other manufacturers special stuff, too, and is iOS compatible. There is a reason there's some copy cat chicom knockoffs of it now. It is the best one.

Price sure came down from when I bought mine.
