So I have a 2015 5.7 with the 8 speed and I'm having an issue with a whining noise under acceleration or revving. It only happens with the A/C on. The noise matches the revs of the engine, so I'm assuming it's one of the accessories. Is it safe to say the AC clutch is going out or can it be something else? I guess I need to remove the belt and spin each pulley to find out

Let me know your thoughts!

search 'whining noise' here. Its the transfer in the coolant lines... the noise will actually match your speed as it transfers coolant. The position they are bolted to on the passenger side makes the noise resonate through the cab. There are a few fixes out there...

Well I tried that fix even though it was for the Trans cooler lines and it didn't seem to help.

Trouble is that the noise isn't consistent. It's only when then A/C is on and after driving for about 10 minutes. As soon as I turn the AC off by either pressing the button or turning off the blower entirely, the noise goes away. I would describe the noise a sort of a wimpy supercharger whine.

When an AC compressor is going bad does it make noises like this? Is it just a pulley? I want to figure this out before going to a repair shop

Don't mean to bring an old post back from the dead, but I wanted to give an update.

My noise is still there but doesn't appear to be causing issue. I've had the dealer check the A/C system when the truck was in for a recall and they couldn't find anything wrong. The A/C blows cold and has no problem cooling things down even. I guess the compressor is just noisy? I only really notice it at low speeds, such is driving in a parking lot or on a residential street.

Hi fijicorey,

While I’m glad to hear the noise doesn’t seem to be causing any trouble, I certainly understand why this would be concerning. If you do decide to have your dealer look into this again, please do not hesitate to send us a private message. We would be happy to provide an additional layer of assistance by connecting you with a Case Specialist who can work alongside your dealer to find a potential solution.

Is it a whine or more of a hiss? If it’s a hiss that can be a sign of low refrigerant or a failing expansion valve.

It's a whine that changes tone with RPM. It's only when the AC is on and not just the blower motor (tested by pushing the AC button). I can't really hear it outside the truck with the hood open, just inside the truck. It's been doing it for the two years I've owned the truck. It does get annoying at times, but it doesn't seem to be causing any performance issues. I wouldn't think it would be worth taking it in until it starts causing issues.

I take it you're sure it's not just the high pitched wine you can get from the blower motor, like I'm getting from mine??

From the descriptions, kinda sounds like the water pump pulley is starting to go out (wont necessarily leak coolant). OR the idler pulley is making noise. With the engine running, spray some water on the idler pulley and see if noise changes or goes away.

FWIW mine has started doing this too, sometime over this summer. I get a low volume whine that matches engine RPM but once above 1000RPM or so you cant hear it anymore (drowned out by engine, I think)

Once it starts, which usually seems to be after the truck is driven 10-15 minutes, you can hear it at idle. At that point if you turn off AC the noise will go away, so its something with the AC. The fluid xfer TSB I thought was for earlier years, mine is 2017.

I've had that whine on my 2016 5.7 since pretty much the day I bought it.AC works fine and I live in FL so it's always in use.In my opinion it's just a noise and that's the extent of it.Don't start ripping things apart and changing things. It is what it is...

I just had my compressor changed and don't remember hearing the noise your talking about and don't have that problem in my other truck, which is the same, but the new one does. The mechanic said he found a leak in the condenser, but don't know if that will fix it. I'm going to change the belt tensioner. Maybe the compressor is causing stress on an old part and it isn't getting the tension it needs

If the tensioner or clutch on the compressor seizes and breaks the belt it could wrap around parts that may get broken.
