I had this nerve wracking thing about 2 years. Bought it sight unseen from a guy whose idea of "great condition" was way different than mine. It had a decent maintenance history but high miles and 1st gear was hesitant to engage at certain times. I worked on it waaaay more than I drove it. It handled amazingly and was decently fast but there are too many idiots on the road to enjoy driving. Just replacing the plugs and coils required removing the bumper cover, intercoolers and various heat shields. I about broke even on the sale not considering my labor hours. It was a rare car in 2002 with the Aerokit and full carbon fiber interior packages but parts prices have gone up on these over the years and now it's someone else's problem!

I wanted a 2021 Camaro LT with the supa charger 6.2L manual shift, but could not swing the money and did not want to eat the insurance cost. Than there was the practicality of it, doubt it would do well towing my 2,200 lb trailer, LOL.

Them Porsches are nice, but the upkeep/parts especially in states insane. I had the chance to ger a 959 in Europe, but the insurance and upkeep in Europe was way beyond my military pay, so I settled for a 74 Mercedes SEL instead.

I had a weekend only policy through Grundy so it was "only" $600/year but I couldn't drive it to work and was limited to 5000 miles annually. They put in a very expensive windshield for free so the policy was essentially free for 2 years. Took months to get the windshield right.

Are you sure it was a 959? I think they only made a couple hundred of those and they are now million dollar cars. I like those big Mercs like in Roadhouse.

959 is the number that sits in my Boird Brain (so take number grain of salt), they were souped up Boxsters. Now if U got the top of the line ones, they were monsters, out of the factory 320 KPH limited on autobahn. There was no way my wife than would have let me get it anyway, not do well in Military Family with 2 kids, wife N me in Europe ne way. That Mercedes I had was a straight 6, 2 carbs in line, with the electric adjustable auto suspension and such. Was a great car for an old Mercedes. I thought I was bad doing 180-200K on autobahn, till a 7 Series Beemer of something like that pass U and U barely see the tail lights. All things being relative. I bout went broke keeping gas in the Mercedes cause at that time, all we got for fuel coupons (that U paid for of course), was 400 liters a month. Not take long for that Big Monster to chew through 400 Liters. (than U end up on economy buying fuel for 4X the price U did with coupons).

Those were the days.

I totally understand. I bought a 2003 Nissan 350Z brand new off the lot and put all of about 3000 miles on it over the three years I owned it. It went to the road racetrack and on long windy country road drives.

Besides maintenance I didn't have to repair anything but, dang, I drove it less than I thought I would. There were several reasons for that, from trying to commute with a 6-spd manual in rush hour traffic, miserable traction on wet roads which are very common in Western Oregon and the concerns I had over having some dipstick smack into me.

So, off it went and all those concerns were gone. Shortly after I sold it, I bought the 2007 MegaCab and all was right with the world.

Hah, 959 is the all wheel drive supercar that is worth a ton. Seinfeld has one. I think you meant 986 for the Boxster. They are neat cars but being mid-engine, hard to work on. It has 2 trunks. The Cayman is also mid-engine but is a coupe with a fixed roof, also called 987 depending on year. I didn't think they went that fast but who knows. Supposed to be the best handling Porsches. Slow down with all the metric, lol.

The Z's are nice and definitely reliable. I had a friend that commuted in one for years. No real issues. I took the Turbo to work a few times. No real traffic but the clutch was pretty stiff. More worried about getting hit by some dope on the phone. It actually did great in the rain with AWD and sticky tires. All that weight on the rear tires keeps it planted. I never felt it get sideways but I also was not brave enough to turn off the traction control.

My friend has a 16' 911 Turbo since new, it's that robin's egg blue colour and it's a beautiful vehicle.

However, last week in the school parking lot (our kids go to the same elementary school) some clown decided to do a three point turn in the drive-thru laneway and clipped his front left corner and left the parking lot.

My Buddy only observed the damage as he came back to the car with his two sons from picking them around back of the school.

This was a never hurt vehicle since new, and now it's about $6K to repair it as there was body and lens damage, plus the front hood was also knocked out of alignment as well.

Have to love private property auto insurance claims, and clowns that hit and run!!!!!

That really sucks. The newer cars are insanely expensive and damage history is a big deal at resale.

Another reason I sold it was that my family couldn't fit in it any more. The back seats are too small for my boys now.

Agreed, and my buddy's biggest disappointment is that it has a claim on it now!

It's not a mint/pristine 911 Turbo anymore, but one with a collision/damage claim on it now.

He does plan on keeping it indefinitely and pass it forward to his kiddos (they can fight over who gets to take it out on date nights...lol).

Nonetheless, it really does suck, and I feel for him as it's his summer toy with full PPF over the entire car and super low mileage as well, that was also in "brand new showroom" condition, too.

Yeah, that is even more stressful to own than mine since it's so much newer. The old ones are holding their value but a lot of that is the weakened dollar. The new ones aren't available in manual but are wicked fast. We can drive our cars year round here but the heat is terrible for several months for any kind of convertible or dark colors.
