So my bother in law and I were going to go to the deer lease tomorrow to do some stuff. We were going to take my truck to see how it handled with a trailer. So we hooked up the trailer and I drove my four wheeler on it. Got it all positioned nice and good like and I heard a pop. Didn't think anything of it. Just the truck shifting under the weight of the four wheeler. Tie it down and look at my hitch. Oh ****. First thought was I had gone way over the tongue limit and broke it. Upon further inspection we discovered that the bolt that should be going through the bumper isn't there. I guess when I had my bumper put on the people didn't put that particular bolt in place. I didn't check to make sure it was there, I just assumed it they did everything right. So I pull the four wheeler off and practiced backing the trailer back in place in the dark. Not a pretty sight, but luckily my dad is a pro and a half at the trailer stuff so he helped me. So now the bumper place is going to be receiving a call Monday to replace my hitch. It might still be good but I personally don't trust it. It looks slightly bent. And then the trailer light don't work on my truck for some reason... That's a question for another day though. A damn good thing we caught it before we left the house and it completely broke on the road.

For backing up a trailer, put your hand on the bottom of the steering wheel and turn the wheel to the side you want to go

Much easier to just put your hands where ever you always do when driving, and then, while backing up, look in the outside mirror, and "Turn Towards Trouble". If the trailer , when viewed in the outside mirror, is about to hit somehting, turn the wheel towards that thing, whatever it is. Don't think about it, just do it the same way you always do.

This way, you don't have to remember to put your hands in a special place, or turn the opposite way.

It will also work with the rear view mirror.....

I always use mirrors when backing up. I can't back worth a damn if I look backwards. I'll practice more when I get everything fixed and under control.

Also, make sure to "cross" your safety chain so it makes an X under the hitch. That way if the hitch fails or pops off, the X of the chain will catch and support.

But, I see you have a Bull-Dog hitch on that trailer. Its a great hitch, doubt it will fail. But, someone may forget to latch it, then a bump will pop it up and off..

I would be taking it back to the shop that installed your bumper it should have more than a single bolt supporting your tongue weight - class IV is 1200lbs

Its a class three thats on right now. I will be getting a class four on just for the extra tongue weight it can handle.
