Today I embarked on my next fun project: Quieting down the cab from road noise. I assumed - correctly - that the interior has not previously been apart, aside from a previous owner installing two 10in kicker subs in a box.

Last week I purchased 3x36 square feet of Noico black sound deadening mats, and 2x36 square feet of their 130 mil red insulation mat. Everything showed up yesterday, so today I began taking apart the cab interior. Since the previous owners didn't really care for this thing... there was TONS to clean up. Some glass from a previously broken rear window as well.

Now that the first section of carpet and seats are removed I can clean, clean, and clean all the dirt and dust and install mats this week. My plan is to lay down the black mats along the ceiling, floor, rear bulkhead, tunnel, A/B/C pillars, and front firewall. If I have enough left, the doors as well. When all is said and done, it should drop the inside noise a few decibels and make for a more pleasant ride on those long hauls.

You should be happy with the results, even just doing the floor makes a big difference. When I did my interior upgrade about this time last year I did that along with a new carpet, that makes a nice difference too.

So far so good. More progress this evening after work. The rear of the cabin is almost done. I wanted to try the hardest part with the most compound curves first. I'll pick it back up tomorrow when I get the rear cab done, then start removing the front seats, amp, and headliner.

Looking good so far. You might look into some Mass Loaded Vinyl as well.
The product you purchased helps change the frequency a panel resonates at.
MLV on the other hand straight up blocks sound transmission.

A bit more done. I put the rear padding back in, shampooed the rear seats and got some really nasty colors out of the cloth

This evening I removed the headliner which kind of confused me at first, but was able to get it out by putting the front seats all the way back and taking it out the front passenger door. Then I saw these black mats on the ceiling. They're some weird oil soaked fiber and are super messy. I'll deal with them tomorrow.

The roof will get the Noico black 60 mil matting, followed by the Red 90 mil thermal barrier matting.

Side question, on the passenger A-pillar, what is this connector for?

And now the roof is mostly done. Tomorrow I'll put the thermal layer on and clean the headliner, get it ready to reinstall and see how much quieter it is on the road. Then, removing the front seats and front carpet to do the rest of the floor, some cable management, and another thermal layer. It feels great to make some progress.

How did you deal with the messy mats that you found on the ceiling?

I waited until the roof was pretty hot from the sun, then while wearing latex gloves, I used a plastic putty knife to get them off. After that, thoroughly cleaned the roof with acetone. All the gunk came off fine.

Glad it was an easy clean up!

No progress today - it's too damn hot to be working in/on the truck! 90º outside, about 95º inside the cab. I had some errands to run and... WOW. With just the parts I've done the road noise has dropped immensely. But now, I can hear the HVAC fan (on 2, 3, 4, full) is REALLY loud. This might be a dumb question - but what can I do to drop the noise of the HVAC system? Mostly the blower. @HemiLonestar / @HTXRamExp - would it make a difference to put some of the sound deadening mats on the HVAC ducting?

Dude, you'd have to pull the dash to access all that **** lol...is the noise of air going through plastic tubes or the noise of the fan/motor itself?

It's the sound of the fan/blower, really. No squeaks, rattles, or grinding. It just sounds like a vacuum cleaner. I guess I could try using some of the matting on/around the blower?

I guess you could, but I mean, how would you? The part actually making the noise is up inside the housing. I suppose you could put some there.

The only thing I can think of doing would be to remove the dash and completely wrap up the ducting as well as put matting on everything behind the dash. F that noise... I'll have to live with the sound of a hoover in my dashboard. Funny because before I started this project I could barely hear the blower over the road noise LOL.

So far, so good! I put the interior back together after getting the roof done. I still have the front half of the cab and the doors to do, but family weekend getaway is here. I'll pick it up next week by doing the doors, saving the front floor for last. I also want to run some ⅜" foam through the door seals while I get the trim pieces and door seals out.

Here's what the roof and back firewall look like with the thermal padding in place. It sounds so much quieter on the freeway - I can hear all the interior pieces, doors, and suspension rattles now. And my HVAC fan blower.

no matter how much you sound deaden the duct work and dash, there is always going to be direct, open air, pathway from that fan to your ears.

can toss in filters before the fan and before the air comes out of the vents but there goes the air flow.

Next up: Going to try and reduce the door rattles. Window and door seals are not cheap. I have a few rolls of 3/8in of foam and I'll take a stab at this today:

Well... I tried the trick of running the 3/8in foam through the door seals. No matter what I did, the foam kept tearing after getting it about 3-4 inches into the seals. With lube. I think I'll have to spring for new seals.
