I have a '17 Laramie with the 8.4" Alpine system. I would like to replace my dash speakers but am confused as to whether I need 3 ohm or something else. I've read some posts that said a 3 ohm with a 4 ohm resistor works well and I've also read posts that say a 3 ohm speaker drops right in (with the Metra adapter). Can anyone clarify, for sure, what is needed?

Thanks
Stan

The Alpine 3.5 inch speakers on dash are 2ohm, technically 2.3ohm(I tested them with a meter) and have no tweeter, just a cone type speaker. The JBL Gx302 is exact same ohm as the OEM speaker(2.3ohm) some have tested at 2.2ohm , right at $50 new. Don't need a resistor at all and they sound excellent. Infinity also makes a 2.3ohm ref3022cfx but are $10 more and pretty sure same as jbl. I have both and they sound identical to the jbl Gx302. Think resistors are being used on the non alpine, I been running the Gx302 on each corner and a infinity 3022cfx in center for a year plus and they sound great. I've looked at higher priced speakers but can't see any reason to do that being I am using the stock alpine Amp and I can't really see how they could sound any better without a aftermarket Amp, they sound great even at full volume. Those are your best options and they are efficient, pretty much any other 3.5 speaker would work but volume would decrease due to not same ohms or not as efficient. Pretty much everyone who puts in the jbl gx302s loves them. Is really only option out if you want higher volume and nice highs. I am one of those people who likes to try different things instead of the mainstream speakers etc, I searched for weeks and there are no other comparable speakers. I did my rear doors with jbl 6x9s too. Very happy with the sound quality now.

Which jbl’s did you use in the rear? You didn’t change front door speakers? Any idea what works for the headliner speakers? Sorry for all the questions.

The rear I found some open box jbl power series 6x9s good speakers, were cheap and were 2ohm(stock rear door 6x9 has no tweeter, just full range poly speaker) . Power series is longer made, but they sell jbl 2ohm 6x9s, prob gx series is one, so will be just as good. Front doors have no highs, only mid and lower bass, no real reason to change them. I am going to do front doors with some 6.5s only because I have them left over and are 2ohm, then will use the tweeter for the set on the headliner. I don't need as much bass in doors since I have 1,000 watt Amp running 2 infinity kappa 1200w's. The front doors sound fine with the OEM speaker, just add a layer of butyl sound deadening and some closed cell foam in strategic places on panel to stop creaks and rattle.

For dash speakers getting the adaptors can be hard to find. I went through Crutchfield for them. It's like they have the market cornered on ram dash adaptors. You can install without, I did it for a few months, just crimped some spades on and pushed into oem harness then taped it up. Worked fine, but since I had to get the center 3.5 I found open box speakers and ordered the harness at same time. Front door 6x9 isn't all that bad, plus is shallow there, so skip it. Reason the dash and rear doors sound bass heavy and muffled is no tweeter. Front doors don't even put out highs, so no 6x9 will make a change in highs and the bass is already pretty good, so is waste for very little if any gain.

Did you happen to take any pics of the strategic spots where you put the sound deadener?

I did entire door panel with butyl and top of the plastic door panel and behind handle and arm rest with closed cell foam, when putting panel back on, just had to put a little more push on panel to get it on, puts enough pressure to stop the rattles.
