Caught a break from the rain today and was able to complete the 6 speaker swap-out on the 2017 Tradesman Crew cab. Out went the rear and front speakers, in went JBL 302 3.5in in the dash, and Infinity Primus PR9613IS in the rear. Easy drop and fit with one exception: the front doors required 1/2" nylon spacers and 1/2" longer machine screws. The Metra harness adapters made the swaps almost easy except the smaller connector on every harness were very tight and required some loosening with a small screwdriver before slipping onto the speaker connectors with light pressure. The first few attempts and I bent speaker pin blades before loosening the connectors. I can see someone breaking a blade off the speaker trying to get these on, so consider yourself warned.
After some adjustment with the new Android head unit, I think the set up sounds fantastic. The head unit has a loudness boost which really pulls the bass forward. I use the pre-loaded rock EQ and about a 30% pull back from front to rear allows me to hear every speaker in the truck from the drivers seat. Clear, articulate bass from drums and bass guitar runs stand out. I would say every instrument is clear and unmuddled. Vocals are articulate and not tinny or trebley. I was afraid I might need an amplifier to get sound this good, but I won't.
After doing this, I would say in order of audio improvement and enjoyment the following made the most difference:
(1) New head unit
(2) Front speakers (dash)
(3) Door speakers
Things I'd like to do:
(1) Find shallow depth baffles to fit the 6x9 door openings. I attempted to use some I purchased online and trimmed down to fit the shallower door depth but they did not fit as hoped. I hate to have the speakers exposed in the door open to moisture.
Overall, easy mod and plenty of access to dash speakers. All in for speakers and harness adapters: $160.
