Speedo Calibration

Hey all, please excuse my ignorance, first time truck owner, with zero experience of customizing!

I've just purchased a 2015 2500, and it's got 325/60R20 tires on it. It came with a Hypertech speedo calibrator, but from what I can gather the previous owner forgot to return the car to stock settings before it went into the dealership, and they updated something and now the calibrator won't work (it's giving an error code 90). So I think the truck has been returned back to stock settings, but not through the hypertech device.

Hypertech want $135 to reset it, which seems like daylight robbery given that the device has already been purchased and has only ever been used on one vehicle. Furthermore, their customer service rep was pretty rude and basically told me he'd got me over a barrel and to hand over $135 or deal with my speedo being wrong.

After that, I'm not handing over a cent to this company. I can deal with my speedo being off if necessary, but I'm not giving money to a company like with an attitude like that!

However, I'd like to get it fixed if I can, so I thought I'd reach out for advice. Are there alternative products out there that I can buy? Can I just take it to a dealership and get them to do it?

Basically, what's the best way to get my speedo showing the correct speed?

Unless the tire is a size that was offered stock the dealer can't set it to your exact size. They can set it to the closest stock size.

AlfaOBD can set to any size.

Thats a rip off. I set my speedo wit the Superchips flashcal. I forgot to set to stock when it was used on my last truck that was totaled. I called their customer service and they simply sent me a download to run through the programmer and set it to stock so I could use it with my new truck. No charge at all.

@lpennok - thanks, I've been looking into AlfaOBD the last couple of days and it looks a little complicated, but I'm sure I can figure it out. It looks like I'll be able to program my own keys with it too, which is a bonus as I only got one with the vehicle and want a spare (and the current one is temperamental anyway!)

It looks like most people are using the MX / MX+ adaptor, there are lots of cheaper ones out there - is there any reason to spend the extra or is a bluetooth OBD2 adapater the same as any other?

@Luau_Pig - yeah, totally agree. The packaging says it's a speedometer calibrator, and any logical person would expect that you could use that to calibrate your speedometer. It seems ludicrous that A) they've locked the device to a single vehicle and B) when the garage clears your previous calibration they want to charge you another $135 to make the box you purchased from them work again.

Oh well, there are s**t companies out there run by idiots who don't value customer service. Not only will I not be handing over $135 to hypertech, but I'll never purchase anything from them ever, and if it ever comes up in conversation, I'll warn others about them too.

Glad to hear you had a better experience with Superchips, for every s**t company out there there's a decent one waiting to pick up their customers!

@Charlie1979. You don't have to use a mx or mx+ but they are the most reliable. The generic ELM327 may or may not work. I have one I got off eBay that seems to work fine. On the other hand my friend has one he got off Amazon that only reads but won't change settings. Neither generic worked on his Grand Cherokee but my MX worked without issue.

Just to finish off this post, I ended up with the VeePeak OBDCheck BLE (CAN$32 from Amazon), and had no problems using it to recalibrate the speedo. Followed the instructions on this site, and it worked like a charm.
