Starter wire

Have a 2001 2500 24v with a starter issue. There's a brown wire with a connector that comes out of the fuse box and runs down the positive wire leading to the starter. The brown wire was chaffed off before the starter. No crank with key turned but the truck starts when jumped with a screwdriver on the starter.
Does anyone have a suggestion to fix this?
