Greetings all!
I'm new to the board; I try to be as self sufficient, DIY, as possible, but this one has me stumped. Probably because I'm more used to working on less computer-controlled vehicles up until now.
TL;DR version: I'm exploring the compatibility issues of a 2015 steering wheel and EVIC/cruise/audio controls on a 2010 Ram 1500
I am getting ready to install an aftermarket deck and backup camera onto my 2010 Ram 1500. Along with this I am looking into integrating steering wheel audio controls. Stock steering wheel only has the basic EVIC controls (up/dn/lt/rt) and the cruise control switch dangling off the lower-right quadrant. Not to mention that the right-side EVIC button/rocker itself is a bit broken and comes off from time to time (SUUUPER annoying)
Instead of doing the eBay special 'add audio controls' offerings, $130-160 or thereabouts, I found a 2015 leather steering wheel with the newer EVIC clusters and audio controls.
A cursory search suggested that I might get lucky with a plug-and-play setup (I was skeptical), while others suggested a PCM flash or some such might be required to enable certain added functionality (i.e. audio controls).
I pulled the stock steering wheel and plugged in the 2015 wheel and nothing works, not even the horn or backlights. Just to make sure I didn't screw up the clockspring, I plugged the old wheel back in and wouldn't you know everything works again.
After a more in-depth search, it appears I may be up against a more fundamental compatibility wall. The harness plugs into the clockspring with the same connector, but the wires are different. I see mentions of possible need for upgraded modules somewhere down the communication chain. Even then, a PCM flash may still be required to recongnize properly.
I may be in over my head, and this juice may very well not be worth the squeeze.
Has anyone else here tackled this one before? Any hints or resources to point to?
Thanks all for your time reading. Wash your hands.
