so i have a 99 ram 1500 5.2L 4x4 with a 5 inch lift (was 7") and 35" tires
when i first bought the truck a year and a half ago it drove well, no shakes, shimmies, squeaks, thuds, or pops. over the 10k miles ive put on it it started to have all the above listed problems. To rectify said problems i went to 4wheel parts and they said basically my front end was shot so i let them replace all 4 ball joints, 3 tie rods, and all 4 tires. then when i drove the truck home it started making a loud popping noise when making a right turn. and i noticed a shake /shimmy when i apply the brakes. i took the truck back to 4wheel parts and they said that the 1 tie rod they thought was good is now bad because "all the other new parts are tight and that puts extra stress on the old tie rod" then the sales guy says my power steering gearbox is leaking and should be replaced and that is causing the shaking. so last week i replaced the last tie rod the power steering gear box and the steering stabilizer shock . and i still have shaking when i apply the brakes. its scary if i hit the brakes hard at 50 mph and when slowly rolling it feels like a tire has a bubble on it or an axle is bent. but since it only does it when i apply the brakes im thinking its something else. now before some one screams its the rotors, i replaced the rotors and pads 6k miles ago to EBC slotted rotors and green stuff pads. so before i replace them again i want to look at other options as to what could cause the shaking when braking?

bad bearings?
i spun each tire when was on the lift and didnt hear/see/feel
any indication that a bearing was bad.
front rotors?
inspected and look great very minimal pad wear, no discoloration, when spun no obvious sign of warpage

what else should i check? any and all help will be greatly appreciated.
and sorry for the long drawn out post.

Calipers? And I wouldn't discount the brakes/pads just cause they are new. Could be a bad set. If its only under braking conditions, has to be one of those.

Have you checked the u joints? If your hearing a pop while turning that is a good indication that is your u joints.

^true.
Doubtful it's the abs system. If that was the case it would not be a side to side issue but a front to back symptom. I read on here somewhere a long time ago that drilled and slotted rotors were not a good idea on these vehicles because of the force it requires to stop the vehicle. Something along the lines of wearing the rotor out/warping it much sooner than usual. When replacing the rotors use the non drilled/slotted as a comparison. Might save some coin too.

I have the drilled and slotted ones. So far so good. Havent checked them lately but they seem to be okay.

Kinda on topic, when I go over bumps I feel a shimmy/noise/vibration/wobbeling. Is that cause of my bad steering box not being able to handle the bumps? Can think of anything else it would be.

my son's 00 Dakota R/T had a terrible wobble/shake when braking. After changing pads & rotors to no avail, we diagnosed a bad hub & wheel bearing. We had replaced the oem ones, because there was a squeak he was sure was the bearings. We made the mistake of replacing with Dorman hubs, because they were 1/2 the price of Mopar. long story short, you get what you pay for. Anyway it took bolting the rotor on the hub several different ways, and dial indicating the rotor surface to recognize some anomaly. Finally we dialed the hub, and found the real culprit.
For my own vehicles, I am convinced that bumping the vehicle into neutral or park at stops after steep hills or heavy braking, allows the rotors to cool more evenly. I have been doing that for years, with good results. I just saw last year the NASCAR drivers do the same thing, when they have red flag stoppages.

what exactly should i be checking for in the Ujoint? i couldnt see any play when i had the truck on the lift and tried shaking the tires looking for play or trying to locate the noise.

When the truck is jacked up check and see if your movies side to side or up and down. Obvously its gonna turn but its should do more than that.

I had a vicious wobble/shake on my last truck and it ended up being a caliper not retracting fully. It requires two peeps though. One to apply and realease the brake while the other checks the travel of the caliper. U joints is a good thought too. And I would also suggest not going with slotted rotors this time. Just to eliminate that. Hope you can find it without too much $$.

To me it sounds like a lot of your issues are stemming from your lift kit.

Usually steering boxes are just refurbs, that was a waste. Redhead or borgeson are the only good replacements. Steering stab does nothing, another waste. Stay away from that 4wp, they are completely full of it!
