Fellas,

I took apart both sides of the front end with the exception of the upper and lower control arms.

I’ve had a Mayhew innner tie rod kit for several years. I’ve never used it on my 2015 Bighorn until today. I couldn’t get any of the adapters to fit over the end of the inner tie rod. The green one was the largest size and I couldn’t get it over the back of the inner tie rod. So I had to put a pair of locking pliers on it and hit it with a lump hammer to loosen them.

That’s not gonna help me when it comes to tightening it up and getting the correct torque setting. Does anyone know if Mayhew has a larger adapter to fit these inner tie rods? Or for that matter, is there another kid that will fit these inner tie rods.

I also have another question about that clamp that holds the rubber boot at the back. Obviously this was a one time use clamp. Does it matter what type of clamp I put at the back to hold that rubber boot in? What have you fellas used?

I’m also gonna clean up the rust in that area before I start putting the new front end parts in.

Thanks for any helpful tips!

I was looking at the end of the axle. There’s a fair amount of rust. It’s got 160,000 miles.

Would you guys replace these? Or just clean them up and put a preservative over the rusty areas?

The rubber boots are intact.

Thanks!

Fellas,

What tie rod tool have you been using for the inner tie rods?

I need to find something that will fit this inner tie rod.

Thanks!

I purchased this for the bands on the tie rod

I just Tighten the actual tie rod with a pipe wrench. Not the best but, no problem yet
Ideally I’d like to install the new inner tie rod with something that can be torqued correctly. Still looking online for something made very well. Checking reviews.

Also I’ve watched some videos saying to grease the end of the tie rod before putting the rubber boot on.

Wire brush the splines clean then give them a good coating with anti-seaze

I was looking at a few videos today. In one of them it looked like he removed the cv axle boots and greased them again. Then put the rubber boots back on again.

Is this a good practice?

If you have the proper band tool and clamps it's not a bad idea, but if you don't have them, then don't mess with the boots

I watched the video. He uses that tool to remove the inner tie rod. But then he uses an adjustable wrench to tighten it. Apparently, I guess the torque specs are not critical on this part? Also a lot of negative reviews to the Amazon link.

At this point, I’d rather spend the money on a really good quality inner tie rod tool kit.

One more tool in the arsenal may not be a bad idea. Would you possibly have a link to this band tool?

Thanks!

Since I have the whole thing pulled apart, I decide to change the CV axles

Watched a few videos on YouTube. The driver side is easy. A few taps and it came out with that intermediate shaft. I wrapped a towel around that and got it out using my bench vice. The splines are perfect.

Have been struggling with the passenger side CV axle for two hours

I watched a video of a guy up in Canada who had it up on a lift. He couldn’t break it loose with a large hammer. He wound up using an air impact gun with a hammer attachment.

I’ve had an Ingersoll rand kit in my toolbox and I’ve never used it. I’ve had this thing going for the last 90 minutes. I’ve tried spraying this thing with PB blaster. Maybe it loosened 1/32 of an inch.

This thing is stuck. I even briefly hit it with some map gas. I’m hitting it with the air hammer tool. 3 pound lump hammer (with and without punches),

What are the options do I have to get this thing out?
