What is the stock thermostat in these trucks rated at degree-wise? I am going to be doing the engine driven fan removal mod and Sean from Hemifever recommended I get a 180° thermostat. I'm just curious why this is necessary. Thoughts?

I would like to find a 190, may have to settle for a 180.

What's the point of going down to a 190 or 180? These engines are more efficient at around 200°

I don't like seeing temps over 206.

Efficient sure, may have something to do with fueling?

In my mind, idling in traffic on a hot day I see 204-208 on water, 210 on oil, 160-165 on transmission temps. I don't care for them being that hot. If I can drop them 5-10 degrees, should be better.

Here is something I found to help explain it
How can a cooler thermostat increase horsepower

Most of the engines these days use the higher temps as part of the emissions control and it is where the engine is set that "they" say produces the least amount of emissions. as it may be the least emissions it may not be the most performance.

I ran a 160 degree in all my small block non emission controlled motors.

Oh, I completely agree with you. I usually run around a 170 in my SBC's topped with a Holley 4bbl, but I don't want to kill my mpg in this truck. At the end of the day, the extra power is nice, but I'm not looking for that last mph or 1/10th in the quarter. I just want to free up forgotten power an not mess with my mileage as much as possible.

I'm sure results vary with every vehicle, but the way I look at it is the more efficient it runs the better or max the fuel economy will be too. When emissions come in to play efficiency and fuel economy takes a back seat to regulations that have to be met. a good example of this is when Dodge went from the 5.9L that was good for 18-20mpg to the 6.7L which you were lucky to get 10-11mpg when the strict regulations hit the diesel world. the 6.7L is capable of alot more mpg but not in stock form.

With everything I've done with the truck I get better mileage while cruising.

It's not the mod that lowers MPG's, it's not being able to control the joy and smile from the go fast pedal when you press it and "you gone"!!!!

That's why I usually get poor mileage, but capable of low/mid 20's. Just the other day when I went to Hot August nights drove about 150 miles climbed little over 8000' elevation and back down to 3000-4000', Drove very soft as I had the GF in her corolla behind me that could barely keep up with me not even trying (* Charger cant come soon enough!!!!) But all in all I got 22.3mpg per the evic.

That's with running a 180 T-stat and 91 oct. canned tune on that trip.

Well ****, I just bought a 180° T-stat from Moe's!

Haha, nice. Yeah I commute 120 miles round trip for work and most of it is HWY and I average low 20's after everything I've done. Truck used to be high teens when it was stock. The mileage is just a plus since I didn't buy everything for that.

Curious, what is your mod list? Right now I'm running i2 tuner with Hemifever 91 octane tune and oil catch can. I'm getting ready to do (as soon as it all comes in the mail) 87mm TB, VaraRam intake, 180° T-stat, engine fan removal, V6 electric fan install, 4.11's, and 5" exhaust tips. I know not all of that is performance, but it's what I've purchased since I joined the forum.
