First post so I might as well start somewhere :)
Installed the 3" stubby antenna from Auto Zone, it looks awesome and I still have perfect reception.

It could be because he lives in the city where the reception is really good?

I made sure it was on pretty tight and went through about 6 channels and they were crystal clear.
I mostly listen to sports radio, phone songs and Sirius so not too concerned if radio gets fuzzy.
Just looks way better than that stock chrome one :)

This is exactly correct. This is one of those form over function things. If you like it go for it, but don't expect the same range as a full size antenna.

I picked up a 13 inch one from Amazon for 15 bucks... I didn't want to chance not having reception.. That stubby looks great though..

Yeah, if it becomes an issue I was thinking about the one you have matty, looks significantly better than the stock one !!

I've got an AntennaX 5" Stubby, looks a million times better than stock, reception is no different in and around the city, but it's noticeably worse further away from the city in lower reception zones, gets fuzzy faster and gets none where the stock one would at least get some AM. I expected that though, I listen to my usb hard drive, sirius or bluetooth 98% of the time anyways so I don't care about the small loss of reception.

I put a 5" stubby (looks similar to the OP's) on mine and while it does look great, the reception has deteriorated a bit. I haven't gone through all of the stations yet but I was getting some static on a couple of them that I wasn't before. I have 5000 songs on my ipod though so I rarely ever listen to radio anyway.
