Stupid Question...

This might be a stupid question hehe, but it's cold and dark outside and I'm trying to do some homework on my truck tonight before the warm weekend comes while I have some time on my hands.

I'm planning to clean the throttle body out. Could anyone tell me where it is located on the 4.7 L Ram 1500? It's dark out and I'd like to study and learn a little bit about it tonight while I have some free time.

Also, I've red this can effect mpg, is this true?

Right on top of the intake manifold. Follow the big tube from the air filter right to it.

^Yep. It's right behind/under the big ugly airbox on the engine that says "4.7 Magnum".

You'll need to loosen the band clamp on the air hose as well as on the box attaching to the throttle body. Then you'll need to unbolt I believe it's one bolt, from the bottom of the box and it should come off with a bit of tugging.

Since you'll have to loosen the clamp on the air hose, I'd go ahead and take the top of the air box off of the filter to get it out of the way so you don't have to having hitting you while pulling the big box off.

Thanks for the help to both of you! Much appreciated. Could either of you tell me an answer to this? I heard from another source online to use brake cleaner, while I've also read throttle body and carb. cleaner? Does this matter? And how many cans do you guys use to clean yours? I read online someone using 4 cans, seemed a bit of an over kill, but possibly could be true if there's lots of carbon build up I'm assuming?

Also on the 4.7 is the MAF located inside the throttle body unit or is that a separate unit on the 4.7's?

I used Throttle Body and Air Intake cleaner from CRC. Brake cleaner would work great on a really bad throttle body, but it's more caustic than the tb cleaner. I'm not sure if there are any special finishes that Dodge put on the tb's but the brake cleaner could mess those up if there are any.

Just use TB cleaner and a copper brush on it.


Dodges don't use MAFs, they use MAPs or Manifold Absolute Pressure sensors. Which on the 4.7 is located on the intake manifold, so you don't have to worry about that.

Something you do need to mess with is the IAC or Idle Air Control motor, which is on the backside of the throttle body if I remember correctly.

Thank you very much for the help! I was doing some more reading and it looks like you are correct. It seems I need to go ahead and clean the IACV at the same time. Appears to be connected to the tb with a T25 from my understanding. Sounds easy enough and I really do appreciate your help!

I don't remember what size screw it is, but it is a TORX. When I did the tune up on my dad's Ram, I didn't even pull the TB off because it was clean. lol

Don't get me wrong, I HAVE cleaned the TB on my Ram, same process. lol

X2 on throttle body cleaner. Shouldn't need anything more than that and a brush. If its really gunked up, you may notice the truck idles better when you're done.

That's what I'm shooting for. Hoping to get a better idol, a tad bit, but probably not noticable mpg gain, and a better sleep at night after the plugs, sensor, and throttle body cleaning. I purchased this truck as solely a "work" truck with high miles because I got such a good deal on it. When I purchased it, it was obvious the previous owner hadn't been maintenanced it very well. Oil was black, tranny fluid was old, air filter was dirty, ball joints and steering rack were bad, rear shocks were bad, tires and brakes were bad. I just got a heck of a price on it (2,500.)

I've already changed the oil to mobile 1 synthetic, new mopar oil filter, new fram air filter, new steering rack, new Moog ball joints / control arms, new Moog Tie Rods/Ends, new brakes pads/rotors, new tires, new Monroe shocks, and plasti dipped the rims yesterday, and hopefully get the tb/sensor cleaned and spark plugs changed this weekend, a new battery before spring rolls around, and then I think I should be ready to go before Landscaping season kicks back in.

If I'm forgetting anything else simple as general maintenance that I should do, feel free to chime in and let me know what I'm missing!

I hear you, I don't expect all tb's to be full of gunk, but for some reason, knowing the previous owner, I'm expecting this one to be full of it.

Having read your previous, post, I don't doubt it!

Go to the dealer and buy a new PCV valve too while you're at it.

You might also get you some HOAT coolant and flush the cooling system.
Or take it somewhere as that can be uber messy. lol

Hehe, I'm honestly scared to see what it's going to look like in there. But I'm trying to go ahead and get everything serviced up, so hopefully I don't have too much to worry about in the middle of my busy season.

I forgot to add that in the above list, but the coolant flush was one of the things I did right before winter hit. I'll make sure to pick up a PCV valve for it, thanks for reminding me on that one.

Forgot to mention, the whole reason I'm going to work on the truck this weekend. Trying to fix a few more issues. Cruise Control light is coming on, but cruise won't set. After researching online for a while, I've narrowed it down to two different solutions. Either the vaccum hose under the battery which I've heard is a common problem, or the brake light switch on the brake pedal. Have you heard of this problem among these things since you seem to work on yours/dad's quite a bit by chance?
