It isn't the issue at +20F, maybe if it was -30f I would talk. It only happened once?

morning temps here in maine saturday morning were around 20 to 22. started the truck up and had rather loud ....how to explain it....not hemi tick but maybe really loud injectors?? was loud for maybe 15 seconds then quieted down. i apologize for not getting a video. totally caught me off guard. we are moving so been doing a lot of 10 minute trips. was prepared this am to fo a bideo but it was 39 at start up and didn't make the noise.

ive now been on redline 5w30 for around 8500 miles. 2nd batch around 1000 miles ago. possible the heavier oil is having issues with cold temps after redline has done its plating? no issues at all last winter at 10 below and 5w30. we have cold temps coming and im a little concerned. ideas?

That aint cold,

The oils is fine.

You probably heard the result of lifter leak down.

i understand that isnt cold. like i said, i had no issues last winter down below 0. its the usual noise the engine makes but much much louder. I've never heard it be that loud before like that. my truck has sat for 10 days, first cold start never sounded like that. i started it at 39 degrees and then 35 this morning it was fine. it sounded like some videos guys post on here (not hemi tick).

I get same tapping. Not right on start up but after idle comes down a bit. Then taps till almost fully warmed up. After that its pretty quite. Im on redline 0w40 and rp filter. Has done it on every oil and filter combo I've used. Runs great i think im gonna bring it in and have them listen to it. Maybe a exhaust bolt but its not the same tap as my 5.7 made when it was tapping due to exhaust bolts. That was more of a tick.

Look how this guy did it, I guess he doesn't realize all you have to do it dump it in gas.

Ha ha ha nope [emoji23][emoji23]
Blackstone recommended to go to 12k [emoji106]

I'll probably stick to 8-10 cause that's usually what i end up with every 6 months or so .

Second time I have encountered the situation that would normally cause a horrible 3 or 4 second clatter on startup. But NO NOISE! again.

Only difference from previous OCI is instead of PR 20-820, Im using the SRT filter. Too bad the SRT filter isnt black...no one would notice!

so the srt filter is giving better audible results than rp 20820? thats interesting. ive had great results with rp 20820. but have also had a couple times where the truck was louder than in the past (not hemi tick). last round with the big filter i ran 7 qts. didnt add more like others do. this time i did the same. i have another quart of redline kicking around and i think i may add half and see if that does anything.

Yep, so far the SRT filter seems quieter in that particular instance. Outside of that, its about the same as the RP filters (I tried standard and oversized) were.

In any filter case, I only fill oil up to the high fill line on the dipstick. Takes maybe 7.3 quarts with the SRT and oversized RP filter. I dont call this "overfilled" because its still not higher than the high fill line.

All 3 filters tested with RL 5-30. The *only* other difference I can think of is if the RL has cleaned something in the engine to prevent the noise, but the fact others have the same noise in the same circumstances makes me think its just how things are.

Would be very happy if the SRT filter is the answer. Its "expensive" but I dont put many miles on the truck so its not like I need one every month.

HAY THERE RON!

Nice to see ya brother. Hope hunting is going well and work is not over working you.

That UOA is something i would be extremely proud of. My truck will probably never show metals that low with that many miles on it right now.

Congrats!

curious if temperature has anything at all to do with noise at start up. i just hate the inconsistency. can go weeks with a nice quiet start up. then get a noisier one. i hit colder temps here and maine (9 this am up to 30.over.the past week). noisier lately. dont recall any loud chatter last winter down below 0 at start ups. same redline 5w30 rp 20820 combo.

TBH through the last 2 winters I was expecting louder starts in the cold and honestly it wasnt much different than in any other temperature. Maybe slightly louder but other than the horrid chatter I get under specific circumstances, cold soak starts of any temperature arent really very different from each other.

My nephew is going to school in Standish Maine and just texted us it is 0 degrees and his hair froze lol

It was 16* here with a 35 MPH wind here yesterday, felt like 2*. All 3 cars cranked just fine.

One weird question, do you 6.4 guys have slower starts in the cold? No chatter or anything, just seems like it takes more juice to get it cranked.
