Anyone have suggestions for protecting the area right above the tailgate handle from scratches due to non-owners opening/closing tailgate. My truck is black and only a year old and I can see a problem developing. A plastic type guard like at the bottom corners of the fenders and bed is what I was thinking. Anything on the market out there?

Make sure any paint correction is done, then talk to your local guys who apply clear protective film, and have them put a "patch" around the handle. Near invisible protection which can be peeled off and reapplied if need be.

Dat Cummins!
Check out lamin-x.com. They have the clear stock sheets of protective film that you can cut to size.

LaminX is pretty thick stuff. I think it would be quite noticeable. I'd go with 3M paint protection. You can buy sheets on ebay, and apply yourself. Do what audio1der said first: correct the paint.
