Tailgate Step Ladder

Anybody have one? Thinking about it as I'm not getting any younger, and it's getting harder crawling in the bed.

Not on my Ram but I have the stripper pole on my F150, and use it all the time. I have been wonder how an aftermarket one would work, and be stored when not in use.

I am not any younger either and I know it really makes it easy to get into the bed to strap things or? Tail Gate Step

When the tailgate is down, there's a couple inches of the end of the bumper that you can still get your toes on. Just put your muddy shoe on that, lean forward as you pull yourself up, then when your toes slip and you bash your shin into the tailgate, your wife can come out and ask what happened when she finds you laying in the fetal position in the bed. (Purely a hypothetical of course.)

I think the one that your linked to @CrBear would be a good one. My dad used to have one similar to what Mlarv linked but there were too many things to have to unfold and lock in place etc each time he used it, so half the time he didn't. Multiple trips sure, but just to grab one thing it was quite annoying to mess with.

i have one similar to that and am happy with it , easy to install and has held up very well , makes it a lot easier to get in and out of the bed of the truck

I've got the OEM kick out step on mine, though it's frame mounted vs on the tailgate.. I'm always a little concerned it'll get drug on a trail, but so far no issues. It works well as a step, good grip and a good height from both the ground and the tailgate. The downside is no handle like the Fords have, though I'm sure there are things you can put in the stake pocket to use as a handle if you need it.

I've been using a cheapy plastic step stool for years now.




Strategically placed below/beside the end of the bumper.
Right foot on the step (or left, if you prefer), left hand on the rear fender just above the taillight.
Left foot on the end of the bumper, lean forward and swing the right foot onto the tailgate.

I always enter on the driver's side, but you may prefer to enter from the other side. Watch out for the tailgate support wire when you swing your foot up, or else. LOL

Using this simple process with a small plastic step requires a fraction of the effort of freestyling your way in.

I tried a Mopar step at a stealership and hate it.
Also, I have a Roll-N-Lock cover, which limits the options for a ladder installation.

I often travel to scuba sites in my buddy's Ferd, and the retractable stairs with a grab pole in his tailgate are spectacular. Not enough to convert me, though.

That is the stripper pole. It works great and hides when not in use.

Yup, and IIRC, the step is very wide, allowing easy access in or out over a wider area.

Reason 1568 to get the MF tailgate, it opens up so many options. But on that note, I have a mini quick ladder for my new truck with no MFTG, but it is a PITA to get it out and use it.

Mine is always simple to deploy and stowe.

I have the factory fold out step which is very similar to the one pictured above. It is nice but as you get older and stiffer it is a long step from the step to the tailgate with no handle to habg on too. Also seeing has how my left knee can't flex with a load I have to step up with my right, then lift the left up and try to get both feet on that little step, then a loooong step up to the tailgate with no hand hold with the right then bring the left up again. Then to reverse getting out and down.
I like the ladder idea but I sure have to wonder how it would work in dirt and uneven ground or is it going to buckle or bow.

I bought one of these on sale at CTC years ago. They have them all over the store for staff to use, so, naturally, I had tested them excessively and knew how incredibly stable they were.

If anyone is feeling a bit challenged getting into/out of their truck bed, these types of units are very stable and make climbing a breeze.

Depending on your upper body strength, you may want to find something a bit lighter but these things make for a very stable climbing platform. This one only weighs 12 pounds.

I've used mine when working in the engine bay.
